dangerous cities

Teresina, Brazil

We have 20 cities on this list and 10 of them are cities in Brazil. And while the country is beautiful, it’s a good idea to only visit places that are considered safe and very public. Venturing out of your safe zone or ‘comfort’ zone in Brazil is a dangerous concept as you might encounter issues such as cities like Teresina, which boast more murders than just about any other city in the world. It’s not exactly an attraction highlight.

dangerous cities

St. Louis, Missouri

The only American city on the list is St. Louis and that does not say very much for this city. We all know it’s quite dangerous because of its high crime rate and it’s very high drug use issues, but to be considered one of the 19 most dangerous cities in the world is an honor no city wants to have. Americans can be thankful that it’s the only city on the list from our great nation, but it still doesn’t bode well for St. Louis.

dangerous cities

Belem, Brazil

When you think of Brazil, you probably think of things like beaches and sun and tropical weather. You don’t think of murder and mayhem, but that is precisely what you will find when you make the decision to visit Belem, which is why we recommend you don’t. This is a dangerous city for residents as well as visitors, and it’s one of the most crime-laden cities in the world. A peaceful family vacation is not something you’ll find much of visiting this city.

dangerous cities

Salvador, Brazil

Salvador is not the most dangerous city in Brazil, but it’s not exactly known for its beauty and its peaceful residents. In fact, there are more murders here than many other cities in the world which makes it quite dangerous. What you will find in this particular Brazilian city is police officers with guns everywhere you look, drug dealers, gang members and others that are looking to do you harm and not any good.

dangerous cities

Cuiaba, Brazil

Riddled with drug dealers and criminals, Cuiaba is not a safe city. It’s not a place in which you want to find yourself alone or even with your family, particularly if you look anything like a tourist. While many of the residents here are happy to go about their daily lives, it’s because they know where to go, what to avoid and how to prevent themselves from becoming a victim. But still, nearly one percent of all the people who live here will be murdered at some point in their lives, and that’s just not something you want to deal with.

dangerous cities

Vitoria, Brazil

A very common site in Vitoria is the site of police standing guard in places to prevent violence. This is an area very well-known for its high murder rate. In fact, nearly 57 people out of every 100,000 will end up dead thanks to someone who doesn’t want them alive anymore. It’s not something that many people are willing to discuss, but there is a very high crime rate here and it’s dangerous for not only residents but especially for visitors in this South American city.

dangerous cities

Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is one of the most popular locations in South Africa, and it’s quite lovely. The issue, however, is that the crime rate and the murder rate here are higher than they are in virtually every other city in the world. The thing about Cape Town, however, is that there are places you can go and remain very safe thanks to tourism and the police and their desire to keep certain areas of this lovely city safe for those who want to come and spend their money and boost their economy. Just stick close to these areas.

dangerous cities

San Salvador, El Salvador

San Salvador is a very well-known location in El Salvador and it’s one many people have on their bucket list of places to visit and things to see, but it’s not a very safe city if you’re not careful. The biggest mistake many tourists make visiting this city is going somewhere they are not familiar and encountering a side of the city that officials don’t want broadcasted to visitors and those there to spend money and bring life to their economy.

dangerous cities

Cuidad Guayana, Venezuela

Venezuela has the second highest number of cities on this list, and it also boasts the most dangerous city in the world as far as murders are concerned. It still, however, has far fewer cities on the list than Brazil. Either way, though, this is the kind of city you want to just avoid if possible so that you don’t find yourself in a situation in which you might be harmed or approached by criminals. There are plenty of Venezuelan locations better suited for your time.

dangerous cities

Natal, Brazil

More than 63 people for every 100,000 people in Natal will be the victim of murder at some point in their lives, as the murder rate here is quite high. This might not be a city you’ve ever heard of unless you are a big soccer fan, but there are many things that happen here that make visitors want to show up and make an effort to see their favorite teams. However, it’s imperative that you make an effort to stay safe here since there is so much crime and so much criminal activity in so many of the neighborhoods.

dangerous cities

Sao Luis, Brazil

Another famous Brazilian city, Sao Luis has more murders than just about every other city in the world on an annual basis. Most cities across the country might see murders in the single digits, but this city sees hundreds of murdered people each year and that’s why it’s so dangerous. If you plan to make a trip here, it’s advised that you do your research and make sure that you are able to find a safe place to stay and learn where you can and cannot go if you’d like to remain as safe as possible.

dangerous cities

Cali, Colombia

Colombia is often referred to as the kind of place in which you are more likely to run into a drug lord than anything else, and it’s for good reason. While the country is not as dangerous as many people like to think, there are cities such as Cali that are quite dangerous and it’s recommend you stay away from cities like this. What’s unsafe is the number of people who die each year at the hands of others, and much of that is drug related crime. But there is always crime that’s just crime for other reasons and that’s what makes this a dangerous place to visit.

dangerous cities

Fortaleza, Brazil

Police presence here is more prominent than just about anywhere else in the South American countries thanks to the high crime rate and the big time drug dealing that happens here. It’s the kind of place in which it is very difficult to gain control over the people who are out to do nothing good with their lives, and that’s why it is one of the most dangerous cities in the world. Like many of the cities on this list, it’s recommended that visitors not spend any time here visiting and seeing the sights.

dangerous cities

Valencia, Venezuela

Valencia has made it onto the list of the 10 most dangerous cities in the world for good reason. For every 100,000 people that call Valencia home, 71 will be killed in an act of violence. There is a big drug problem here and many of the people living here are living well below the level of poverty that’s considered acceptable, and that’s what has caused them to turn to a life of crime that involves even small children. It’s not uncommon to see small kids here living criminal lives with no hope for their young futures.

dangerous cities

Maceio, Brazil

Still not the most dangerous city in Brazil, Maceio is still a place you don’t want to spend any time. It’s not the kind of place in which you want to bother going if you want to have a nice, peaceful vacation in which you feel safe. Imagine all those places in the world you don’t feel safe because you see a lot of police or homeless people wandering around, and then multiply that by about a million and you’ll be in Maceio. Our recommendation is that you don’t visit.

dangerous cities

Distrito Central , Honduras

Honduras is a popular location for many cruise ships to dock, but not this particular city. The crime rate here is so high that very few people want to come here and make a visit. It’s dangerous and for so many reasons. There is a high crime rate, there is a lot of drug usage and drug dealers, there are a lot of criminals and many people are doing what they can to make it through their lives and that often includes dangerous, violent and criminal behavior. It’s not a safe place to call home, and it is one that you should really consider not visiting if you are in the Honduras area.

dangerous cities

Joao Pessoa, Brazil

Out of the 10 Brazilian cities on this list, it is Joao Pessoa that is the most dangerous of them all. This city boasts a very sad 79 murders per 100,000 residents in the city, which is the fourth most in the world. This is just a small part of the reason this city makes the list, as there is so much crime here it’s almost impossible to tell that there are good people in the city. The drug problem is quite bad here, and that’s probably a leading cause of all the violence that goes on here.

Dangerous ACAPULCO, MEXICO

Acapulco, Mexico

Acapulco is known for being a very famous city in Mexico, but that does not mean you want to visit. It’s declined rapidly in the past few years, and much of that has to do with the fact that there is so much violence here. With a bad drug problem and a murder rate that would put the people of CSI out of business, there is no reason you want to go here and wander around by yourself in most neighborhoods, at night or even just in the middle of the day if you want to remain safe.

dangerous cities

Caracas, Venezuela

Caracas sounds like a city that probably isn’t safe, and that’s for a good reason. There are nearly 115 murders for every 100,000 people living here, and the government is in upheaval. There are protests in which rioters take to the streets to burn flags and fight police officers on a regular basis. There is a drug problem that is more severe than most people care to admit, and there is not much to say about the city at the moment other than the fact that you probably just do not want to visit.

dangerous cities

San Pedro Sula, Honduras

More than 171 people are murdered for every 100,000 people that live here, which is why this is the most dangerous city in the world. Additionally, the city is overrun by gangs who make their examples in public, aren’t afraid of the law and who often make it their business to dictate how the city will run. It is not a safe place to visit, and there are many other reasons not to go, but this should be enough for most people.
