There’s been a buzz around the internet regarding Google’s plans to try and disrupt the smartphone game. Last week we reported that Amazon had similar designs. With Apple, Samsung, Google, and Amazon dedicating resources to win the smartphone game you can be sure that we’re going to be blessed with some pretty incredible phones.
While Amazon is looking to go after Apple and Samsung, Google is taking a different approach. They’re planning a low-budget smartphone that will retail at about $100 according to rumors from a Taiwanese supply chain. There was also word about these plans on various Google-related websites, however we cannot officially confirm this is true (but it most likely is).
There’s a very interesting story around this $100 smartphone. First, Google was planning to launch a successor to its Nexus 6 (more proof it’s coming). Second, Apple documents have revealed that the market is moving away from the iPhone. Much of recent smartphone sales have been sub-$300 making a $100 Google phone poised to win HUGE in the market. However, please note that the smartphone business works on virtually no margins – a $100 smartphone is guaranteed to be a loss for Google. Lastly, going back to Apple – if Google was to launch a $100 smartphone is could mean suicide for the iPhone 6 which is scheduled to retail at $800. Yes $800. Think about it – the best smartphone is $800 and number two is $100 – ten out of ten times you’re going with number two in that situation.
A very interesting development to say the least. We will keep you posted on Google’s entrance into the smartphone game. It could be a game-changer.
