Old Meets New: A Look At The All-Electric Morgan EV3

Morgan EV3

Established in 1909, the Morgan Motor Company is best known for their roadsters and track-day cars, especially their three-wheelers. Morgan produces a range of beautiful cars, all built by hand, and whose designs are inspired by cars from the 1940’s and 1950’s. Recently the company has unveiled their newest creation, and it’s the first all-electric Morgan: say hello to the EV3.

The Morgan EV3 certainly looks like a car from yesteryear, and in a good way, however it’s extremely modern and sophisticated. The company wanted to create an all-electric car that was completely bespoke and constructed by hand, and one that would be beautiful and unique. While it retains that iconic Morgan design, it embraces many new technologies as well. And there’s really something to love about it’s design; from the off-center headlight to the tubular body, the EV3 is charming.

The EV3 is the first Morgan ever to feature composite carbon fiber in the body work, and the remaining panels in the body are made from aluminum which makes this three-wheeled roadster extremely light. Morgan says that it weighs “less than 500 kilograms” (1,102 pounds), and it certainly needs to be as the car only operates on electricity.

Under the hood of this little Morgan is a 20kWh lithium battery and a liquid-cooled 46kW electric motor. The EV3 can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in 9 second, reach speeds of 90 mph, and it can travel some 150 miles on a single charge. This isn’t meant to be a supercar, rather a fun, small, and agile car that you take out on a sunny Saturday afternoon. So while you won’t be breaking speed records in it, the EV3 still has enough pep in to give the driver an enjoyable and pleasing ride.

According to Morgan, the EV3 will go into production during Q4 of 2016, and “will be priced comparably to the gasoline three-wheeler”, which is about $36,000. While this car isn’t the fastest or most powerful electric car out there, personally I really like it. There’s just something inexplicable about it that makes you fall in love with it, at least I certainly have.
