15 Things You Didn’t Know about Megyn Kelly

Megyn Kelly

She’s the host of her own news program, she’s the moderator at political events, and she’s the woman presidential hopeful Donald Trump seems to have a personal vendetta with. She’s been called names, she’s been called unprofessional, and she’s been treated poorly by those she interviews more than a few times. Megyn Kelly doesn’t let that get to her, though. She’s a professional through and through, and her Fox news program is one of the most watched on television.

In a world where women are known to be treated unfairly from time to time, she’s someone who maintains her professionalism at all points, and she’s someone who is unflappable and unstoppable. That does not, however, mean we know much about Megyn Kelly. She’s powerful and intelligent, but she’s also a human and we know very little about her; so we’ve decided it’s time to learn more.

She’s the full package

Not everyone makes it in the world of news correspondence. There is a certain appeal that someone has to have to make it far in their job, and that’s why many people stay as local as possible their entire careers. Megyn Kelly is not one of those women. She was an attorney with no idea how to be a news correspondent, but she was quick and intelligent enough to learn how to do the job. Add to that the fact that she is a beautiful woman with a strong voice, and a presence that comes across as welcome as well as powerful and she made the perfect news caster. That’s what really made White House Correspondent Brit Hume want to see her succeed in her career. He is the one who passed through her audition tape to people he knew to get her a job.

Her dream job is cowgirl

As a small child, Megyn Kelly did not fancy herself a news correspondent or even a television star. While many young girls imagine themselves growing up to be princesses and doctors and vets and teachers, Megyn Kelly had a different idea in mind. She wanted to be a cowgirl, so she decided to do whatever she could to make sure she was able to achieve that goal. Growing up, she even decided she would take her family photos and her glamour shots dressed up like a cowgirl. Apparently, she was a fan of the phrase that you sometimes have to fake it until you make it, so she did everything she could to be a cowgirl until someone actually taught her how to become one. Was she simply bad at it, or was there not much in the way of cowgirl jobs available for her when the time came?

She’s not a great cook

This is not true of everything that she makes, but Megyn Kelly’s husband says that there are certain dishes that simply elude her every single time. She might be able to find her way around the kitchen when she needs to, when she wants to and when she has the time – which is not often – but the one dish that stumps her every single time is tuna casserole. It’s not that good, it’s not elaborate and it’s not even that difficult. Unfortunately, she cannot seem to find her way around the dish enough to make is successfully. She seems to forget the basics, such as adding things like the actual tuna for which the dish is named. That’s not something to brag about, but at least she’s not messing up something that’s actually delicious and worth eating on a regular basis when you cook.

Her undergrad studies were difficult

Being a woman in her industry, Megyn Kelly has likely endured her own fair share of sexual harassment in the work place, even if it was misplaced and not overly sexual. There is often a fine line between coworkers joking around and others taking things too seriously, but there is nothing too serious about sexual harassment when it comes to women reporting it in the work place. It’s a serious business, and nothing should be taken lightly. As an undergrad studying in college, Megyn Kelly studied these cases and worked with the men and women reporting them. As a result, she likely knows more about the subject than just about anyone, and she is not immune to the fact that things like this happen every single day at work and in other places. Her stance is that it needs to be shut down and stopped.

She learned from Bill O’Reilly

When she was first starting out in her career, Megyn Kelly had a lot to learn. Intelligent though she is, she was new to television and needed to be groomed by someone who knew the ins and outs of the business. When she began appearing every week on Bill O’Reilly’s show, she learned just that. What he taught her is that she can be an intelligent journalist but still have her own opinion and still make sure she can get across what she wants to say without being insulting or belittling anyone in her way. She did just that, and it’s part of the reason her career has taken off to the point that it is at today. She’s not someone who wants to learn as much as possible, and it’s helped her to keep that open mind and have people like O’Reilly to teach her.

She does not like the term feminist

One of the questions that women are asked more than almost any other these days has to do with feminism. They are asked if they are feminists and if they have a belief in that term. While most women are happy to confirm that they are feminists, Megyn Kelly likes to steer clear of that one. She is big on telling the world that she does not like to answer that question because she simply does not like the term. She calls it “unattractive,” due to the fact that she feels it sounds harsh and shrill, and she doesn’t love that. Many have called her out because of it, but she’s not offended by the fact that they are offended by her and her beliefs as she has other things to focus on in her own life, such as her family and her career.

Donald Trump was her fan

There was a time in her career where Donald Trump was actually a huge fan of Megyn Kelly. There were times when he would send her clippings of her interviews and other work she did that he was a huge fan of and ask her to sign them on his behalf. He would also call her to compliment her when she did something that he really enjoyed during her job. However, she began to suspect that he did that as a way of bonding with her and forming a relationship with her so that when he announced it was time for him to run for president she would feel some sort of kinship to him that might make her go easy on him or show favoritism for him in the press. It did not work, and she is not going to back down from her stance on his campaign or what the world needs to know.

Syracuse rejected her

When Megyn Kelly decided to apply for the communications program at Syracuse University as an undergrad, she was rejected into the program. There is no official word as to why she was rejected for this program, only that it was not something she was able to do. Instead, she made it her choice to major in a political science field, which actually helped to launch her journalism career in a way that she might not have been able to do if she had majored in the communications program. In case you were wondering why she began studying sexual harassment, it’s because she was on a panel that did so in her program. She looked at the complaints filed by and against faculty and she learned more than she ever thought she wanted to know during this time in her college career. However, it can be said that it helped shape her current career.

She’s an excellent video game player

You might not know this about Megyn Kelly, but she is someone who is not afraid to relax. Her husband has touted her as the best Ms. Pac-Man player in the history of the game. She enjoys coming home to play the game with her family, and she’s not afraid to get down to it when she’s out in public, either. Her husband once said that if she can find an arcade with this game in the building, she will stop whatever she is doing to sit down and play. If you are anywhere near a New York arcade, you might want to go into the building and find the Ms. Pac-Man game to see if you can find her initials, MMK, on the leader board because he is certain that you will find them there no matter where you go or how many other people have played the game.

Her favorite movie is Willy Wonka

“Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” is a family favorite. Growing up, we all watched it in school at least one time on the rolling cart with the television that came in on days when the teacher did not look so good or the weather was not right. She grew up loving it then and has not stopped loving it even as an adult. Perhaps that speaks to the fact that while she’s at work, she’s a serious and unflappable journalist. When she’s at home, however, she’s a mom who had a fun childhood and who loves to experience things that are enjoyable and filled with fantasy. Believe that her kids have seen this movie more than just a few times with their mother since they’ve been born. When mom is happy, the entire family is happy.

She was one of the originals who doubted the Duke Lacrosse story

A few years ago there was a group of young men accused of raping a girl at Duke University. Without getting into specifics, the charges were charges that most of the world was quick to believe. A young girl accused three affluent lacrosse stars from her school of raping her, and the world was quick to believe it. Megyn Kelly, a fairly new news correspondent, saw holes in the story that she probably only saw because she was an attorney before she was a news caster. She called doubt to the story and she questioned the defense sources that spoke about the case. Before much longer, the case went into a completely different direction and her beliefs were proven and the case against the boys was dropped. It was a moment that defined her career early on.

She does not speak of abortion

In a world where you are either for abortion, against it or you have a belief that everyone has to choose for themselves, Megyn Kelly simply will not speak of the issue. Abortion is a hot button topic, a dead horse if you will, that is beaten repeatedly time and time again, and she refuses to share her opinion with the world. It is her belief that her opinion is private and that she knows where she stands on the subject, and her husband knows where she stands. As of that, no one else is privy to her personal opinion as to whether or not a woman has a right to end the life of a baby inside her womb before or after any particular date; and don’t assume she will one day come out with that one, either. She’s remaining mum.

She was a trial attorney out of college

To say that Megyn Kelly’s career took on a life of its own is an understatement. She wanted to go into communications, but somehow took that rejection and turned it into a law degree instead. When she graduated from college, she worked as a trial attorney. One of her first jobs was for a law firm in Chicago called Bickel & Brewer, which is where she began writing papers for the American Bar Association. From there, she made the decision to change up her a career a bit by becoming a litigator with one of the biggest law firms in the world. She spent nine years at Jones Day working as a corporate litigator, which is part of the reason she is where she is today in her career, with the knowledge and intelligence to do the job she does with ease.

She left law for something fun

It turns out that being a corporate litigator might be a high-paying, lucrative career, but it’s not that much fun. Megyn Kelly enjoyed being an attorney, but the job simply was not something she found entertaining or even that stimulating. She liked what she did and she wanted to turn her career into something she liked going to every single day rather than something that consumed her every day and made her miserable at the same time. She took her knowledge of the American legal system and turned it into something that was even bigger and even better than it was in the past, and she became a television reporter. She called around asking if anyone was willing to hire her, and they actually were. WJLA in Washington D.C. took a chance on her, and that’s how she ended up where she is today.

She’s not afraid to stand up to anyone

The one thing that people love most about Megyn Kelly is that she is not afraid to stand up for anyone. There are those who believe she only stands up to her guests and to the people she is interviewing on her show because she is paid to do it, but she actually doesn’t mind doing it. She does not mind taking inaccuracies, lies and mistruths and turning them around on her guests and making them accountable for their beliefs. It’s called the Megyn Moment and it’s something that made her show one of the most watched, most famous in the world to date. Her guests know ahead of time that coming onto her show means that they might be taken down in front of the entire world, and many of them are all right with that when they are fierce believers in their own minds.
