
It was 1995 when Jerry Yang and David Filo, graduates of Stanford University founded a computer software and web engine company by the name of Yahoo. With big aspirations, the due couldn’t have possibly predicted that their little company would end up with more than 3.4 billion page views each day, making it one of the most popular websites in the world. Part of that reason is their extensive list of impressive acquisitions.
Right Media – $850 million
Right Media was known in its day as an online advertising agency. When Yahoo acquired the company in 2007, it turned it into a part of the Yahoo! Search Marketing family. It’s now part of one of the most profitable and successful Yahoo ventures.
Tumblr – $1.1 billion
The famous blogging site, Tumblr, was acquired by Yahoo in 2013. The popular blogging site was worth $1.1 billion to Yahoo, and it’s gone on to prove yet another successful acquisition by the company. Now owned by Yahoo, the blogging site is exceptionally profitable for the company.
Overture Services, Inc. – $1.6 billion
The search engine marketing company is one that Yahoo acquired for just over a billion and a half dollars back in 2003. It was one of the company’s earlier acquisitions, and it was one of the biggest at that time. The company is now a part of Yahoo! Search Marketing.
GeoCities – $3.6 billion
In 1999, Yahoo decided to purchase a company known as GeoCities for their own use. With a purchase price of $3.6 billion, the company would prove a successful purchase for the search engine company. GeoCities was a web hosting service that is now referred to as Yahoo! GeoCities.
Broadcast.com – $5.7 billion
The little startup created by Mark Cuban was acquired by Yahoo back in 2008, which is the company’s largest acquisition to date. The company is an internet radio company that Yahoo acquired to turn into its own internet radio business. The purchase was a successful and profitable one.
