Peter Jackson is a world-famous movie director. He’s behind some of the most famous movies of all time, including The Lord of the Rings trilogy and the hit movie King Kong. With a directing career that spans more than 30 years, Jackson has made some exceptionally successful films and some other films that didn’t do quite so well in the box office. Read on to find out which Peter Jackson films are the highest-grossing of all time.
The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King – $377.5 million
It was the third and last installment of The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and Peter Jackson’s highest grossing film to date. It made more than $72.6 million on opening weekend alone. The movie opened in 3,703 theaters worldwide. The final installment was much anticipated, which is likely the cause of the significant earnings of this particular movie.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers – $342.6 million
On opening weekend, the second installment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy took in a little over $62 million. The film was shown in 3,622 theaters worldwide and ended up more than $50 million behind the final installment of the movie. Released just a week before Christmas, this impressive opening was one of Peter Jackson’s best films to date.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – $315.5 million
The week before Christmas in 2001, The Lord of the Rings trilogy arrived in movie theaters all over the world; 3,359 of them, to be exact. It was a highly anticipated movie opening, with so many fans of the books looking to see the film and what Jackson would do with it. The film did not disappoint, bringing in a staggering $47.2 million on opening weekend.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – $303 million
By the time The Hobbit was released in 2012, two weeks before Christmas as Peter Jackson seems so fond of doing, the anticipation for the prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy made this movie Jackson’s highest-grossing in terms of opening weekend. The film grossed $84.6 million in 4,045 theaters worldwide, but failed to break any records after that.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – $258.4 million
The second prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy was not nearly as popular as some of his other movies. It made much less than the first installment of The Hobbit series, and significantly less than his other highest grossing movies. Opening weekend saw $73.6 million in 3,903 theaters worldwide.
