World’s Largest Blue Star Sapphire has Been Discovered; Worth At Least $100 Million

World's Largest Blue Star Sapphire

The largest blue star sapphire in the world has recently been discovered in a mine within Sir Lanka. This marks yet another important gem find this year, and officials are saying that the stone is worth at least $100 million dollars, however it could potentially be worth even more money.

The stone was discovered back in August in the town of Ratnapura in southern Sri Lanka, a city known for it’s extensive network of gem mines. The blue star sapphire in questions weighs an incredible 1,404.49-carats, officially making it the largest ever discovered.

Unfortunately no one seems to know who currently owns this sapphire. This blue star sapphire was purchased by an unknown gem collector who has remained anonymous. Apparently he or she told the BBC that “The moment I saw it, I decided to buy. I suspected that it might be the world’s largest blue sapphire”.

Since the owner of the stone is unknown it’s hard to get a exact valuation. Most believe that it is worth somewhere between $100 and $175 million, while the anonymous owner is claiming that it could be worth as high as $300 million. Regardless of the exact figures, we do know that it’s the biggest one in the world and is worth a large fortune.
