Google Buys Titan Aerospace, The Drone Company Facebook Had its Eyes On

Google Reports Quarterly Earnings

If you’re in Silicon Valley you’re well aware of the battle that goes on between the big tech companies. Google, Facebook, Apple, eBay, Amazon and all the other major players are fighting for supremacy. In this latest round, Google took on Facebook and emerged victorious. Their prize? Titan Aerospace.

According to FastCompany, Google reportedly agreed to buy Titan Aerospace, a company that specializes in high-altitude drones, for an unspecified price. Titan will now work closely with Google’s Project Loon, which is sending high altitude balloons that send internet signals to areas of the world that are not currently online.

For those of you who think the name Titan Aersospace sounds familiar – it probably does. It’s the same New Mexico-based startup company that Facebook wanted to buy for $60 million. Facebook didn’t lose out completely. They ended up announcing their Connectivity Lab, which employs the world’s top minds in aerospace technology. They also plucked some of the experts from Ascenta, a U.K.-based company that specializes with high-altitude long-endurance aircrafts.

Now Google and Facebook both have the tools to continue their race to bring the internet to the third world. As if the skies need some more stuff flying around up there. In a way, we must be thankful that these companies compete so fiercely. Ultimately, they will drive technology and make the world a better place.
