Bloomingdale’s Accidentally Gives Customer $25,000 In Store Credit Who Then Goes on Shopping Spree

Ever been at a department store and the person working behind the counter gives you too much change?  You feel guilty about it but you end up taking the extra few bucks anyway?  Well how about an extra $25,000?  Turns out that last week the famous Bloomingdale’s had a bad glitch that resulted in at least one customer getting $25,000 in store credit.   One of the shoppers decided to use the credit to buy $17,000 on merchandise including $10,000 diamond earrings, a $5,000 watch and a brand new Louis Vuitton bag.

If you are lucky enough to be part of Bloomingdale’s “Loyallist” program you may have received an email that included anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000 in store credit.  The program usually awards members $25 gift cards if they’ve accumulated up to 5,000 “Loyallist” points.  But last Friday, members were getting a whole lot more.

The one standout customer who made such lavish purchases was worried his credit wouldn’t go through.  So to make sure he could really take advantage, he went in person to the Bloomingdale’s flagship in Manhattan when it opened in the morning.  Turns out that all of his purchases went through.

Bloomingdale’s called him up telling him that he needs to return the merchandise. The company provided him with two choices: return all of it for a measly $100 gift card or keep it all and be banned from the loyalty program.   He basically said he’s keeping all the gear, mentioning that he wished they’d give him “a real reward.”
