The Canadian mining company known as Lucara Diamond has recently uncover one gem that’s quite special. They call it the “Karowe AK6” and it’s an extremely large diamond. Just how large is it? Well it weighs in at an incredible 1,111-carats, it’s about the size of a tennis ball, and it’s the second largest diamond ever discovered.

Lucara Diamond owns and operates a variety of mines across the world, primarily in Africa. At one of their mines in Botswana, the company employed a new system, called the “Large Diamond Recovery XRT”, that would help them locate rare and beautiful gems. It is essentially a large X-ray device that can scan the ground and it allows them to pinpoint exactly where the diamonds and gems are located. Well just last month they located something quite special, and they were pleased to find the 1,111-carat behemoth in their mine.

Named after the mine it was discovered in, the Karowe AK6 is easily the companies greatest find. The only other diamond that is larger is the 3,106.75-carat “Cullinan Diamond” that was discovered in 1905 in South Africa. Obviously the Karowe AK6 would become smaller, if they choose to cut it, but even in it’s raw state it is quite impressive. Regardless, this is one of the most important gem discoveries in the last 100 years, and it will go down in the history books. The Type IIa diamond is still being examined by gemologists to determine it’s value, and I can only imagine just how much a 1,111-carat diamond would cost.
