Navigation systems have been around for some years now and most new cars come with a navigation system factory installed.  But for the adventure and sports minded person, a personal navigation device is the way to go.The Garmin Edge 1000 is especially designed for bike navigation and fitness trackers.  This model is exceptionally easy to set up and the navigation itself is almost perfect.  With the cadence sensor and heart rate monitor, this model will set you back at least $600.

The Edge 1000 weighs only 4 ounces and measures 2.3” by 4.4” and can mount easily on the front of your bike or device tether.  It has a 3” color touch screen that automatically adjusts to the ambient light conditions during your ride.  It is also water resistant and can handle rain and snow for up to 30 minutes. The first time you use your Edge 1000, you will be asked to set up your preferences such as language, your gender, time format and your birth year.  Battery life is excellent and will last up to 15 hours of continuous use.

You will also be able to set up your personal profile under one of three categories:  Train, Race or Profile.  The “where to” button helps you plot your route and stay on track.  You can easily recalculate the navigation to avoid highways, toll roads, unpaved roads or narrow trails.  The Edge 1000 uses street names for easy recognition while riding and helps the rider know when and where exactly to turn. POI’s or Points of Interest are also included in the navigation and are highlighted along your ride.  One can stop off at a nearby park or garden and also be alerted to area restaurants.

Another option with the Edge 1000 is the various workout modes:  warm up, interval, recovery, rest or cool down.  You can also select the time, distance and calories for your workout and at the end of each ride you can view a summary of your personal workout. The Garmin Edge 1000 is compatible with your smartphone via the Garmin Connect app so that you can track routes, receive calls and texts and post to social media.  With LiveTrack, you can track your activities in real time.  This device is really a sophisticated computer for your bike and can help you get around your own town, or a place you are visiting for work or pleasure or to use as a personal training device for fitness.
