How do you Lose $9.2 Billion in Six Months?

How To Loose Billions

When you become a billionaire, especially a multi-billionaire, currency essentially becomes non-existent. What I mean by that is that you are so wealthy that you can pretty much afford to buy anything (within reason). A million dollar supercar, for example, is a purchase that you don’t even have to think about. If you become a billionaire, you effectively never have to work again in your life. So how does one manage to lost $9.2 billion in just six months? Well ask Harold Hamm, as he is having a rough year.

harold Hamm

Harold Hamm is a billionaire oil tycoon who has grown accustomed to a certain lifestyle over the years. Unfortunately he managed to loose more than $9.2 billion dollars in the past six months. The falling prices of oil caused his company, Continental Resources, to take a massive hit. This caused his net worth to drop from $18.5 billion dollars to $9.3 billion dollars. As if things couldn’t get any worse, his wife filled for divorce.

The divorce has been very public as Hamm’s ex-wife, Sue Ann Arnall, was awarded $995.5 million dollars. This nearly billion dollar check would please anyone, however Arnall was not satisfied. She has appealed that number and feels that she is entitled to more of Hamm’s money. His ex-wife did cash a check from Hamm for more than $975 million dollars, however she is still looking for more money.

So essentially all it takes for you to loose so much money is a change in the economy/energy prices, and a ugly divorce. It would probably be difficult to spend that amount over six months just buying things. Things may not be all bad for Hamm as he recently secured a loan in an effort to revive his company, hopefully gaining back some of the money that he has recently lost. It just goes to show you that no matter how much money you have, you should never take it for granted.
