The Five Biggest Car Insurance Companies in the United States (By Premiums Written)

The car insurance company you choose to have is really important because as a consumer, we want the best deal for the cheapest price. There are lots of insurance companies out there so it’s not easy to know which one is the best; however, knowing which companies are having the most success and doing the most business might help in figuring out which company is right for you. Here are the five biggest car insurance companies in the United States.

5. Liberty Mutual – $2.5 Billion

Liberty Mutual is located in Boston Massachusetts and deals with personal and commercial auto insurance. Two years after the company was founded they dealt out their very first auto insurance policy but it actually wasn’t until 1917 when they began to offer a full variety of auto insurance for customers.

4. Progressive Insurance – $3.8 Billion

Progressive Insurance is based out of Ohio and is the company with the (in my opinion) very annoying Flo commercials. The company specifically handles vehicle insurance which includes cars, motorcycles, boats, RVs and commercial vehicles. Progressive has consistently been the fourth largest car insurance company for at least the past three years and currently sits a $3.8 billion in premiums written.

3. Allstate – $4.6 Billion

Allstate is a huge insurance company overall but even their auto insurance division alone is the third largest in the country with $4.6 billion in premiums written. The company has tons of advertising for their company with the In Good Hands, Allstate’s Stand, and my personal favorite, Mayhem campaigns. Although Allstate is still highly successful they did slip from second to third on the list of largest car insurance companies in the United States.

2. Geico – $4.8 Billion

Geico has been very successful with their car insurance over the last year because the company was finally able to surpass Allstate and secure the #2 spot on the list with $4.8 billion in premiums written (just barely sneaking past Allstate). Geico is a subsidiary of Warren Buffett’s company Berkshire Hathaway Insurance and has over 12 million clients across the entire country. The company has had plenty of successful advertising campaigns with their Geico Gecko, The Cavemen, and more recently, Maxwell the pig (to name a few).

1. State Farm – $8.7 Billion

State Farm just seems to be the top insurance company in general and dominates whatever market it is involved in. The company has nearly double the premiums written than Geico with a mind-blowing $8.7 billion. The company started out as primarily being an auto insurance company so that is their forte but the company is just so far ahead of everyone else.
