The 10 Most Valuable NHL Franchises

hockey

Whether or not you care for the NHL, there is no denying the fact that this is one sport that’s worth a lot of money. The average franchise is worth a staggering $413 million, but there are some teams that are, frankly, much more valuable than others. For the most part, however, it’s the Canadian teams that are bringing in the big bucks. While Americans love their sports, the NHL isn’t always their favorite like it is in Canada. Read on to find out which teams are the most valuable in the NHL.

kings

Los Angeles Kings, $450 Million

The 10th most valuable team in the NHL has only one Stanley Cup title, which the team earned in the 2012 season. They’ve been around since the late 1960s, but never made it as far as a championship until the 2012 season, in which they thrilled the millions of fans they’ve made around the world, though most are found in LA. The teams is owned by Edward Roski and Philip Anschutz, and they’re the only Western Conference Pacific Division team of high value.

redwings

Detroit Red Wings, $470 Million

Detroit fans have never been as excited as they were back in the 2008 season when the Red Wings brought home the Stanley Cup. It’s not the only Stanley Cup the redwings have earned. They have a total of 11, which is probably why the team is so popular in Detroit; winners have the most fans. The Red Wings are owned by Ilitch Holdings and manage to make a significant profit each season, which is why they’re one of the most valuable teams in the NHL.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Penguins, $480 Million

The Pittsburgh Penguins were introduced to the NHL in 1967, which also happens to be the year that the Los Angeles Kings were introduced. However, unlike the Kings with their one Stanley Cup, the Penguins have three Stanley Cup Titles. Their most recent win was back in 2009. The team is owned by personal investors by the names of Ronald Burkle and a former Hockey play whose name you might know, Mario Lemieux.

Philadelphia Flyers

Philadelphia Flyers, $500 Million

The Flyers have two Stanley Cup titles, but the last one they won was almost 40 years ago in 1975. This particular NHL franchise is majority owned by Comcast Spectator. The team is one of the better teams in the NHL, despite the fact they haven’t won the Stanley Cup in almost four decades.

Bruins

Boston Bruins, $600 Million

The Bruins are another old team, founded in the 1920s. They are owned by a corporation by the name of Delaware North Companies. The Bruins have six Stanley Cups in their possession, the last one being from the 2011 season. It’s not surprising to see a hockey team from Boston on the most valuable list, as the city has a penchant for breeding popular and successful professional sports teams, as well as successful college sport teams.

Philadelphia Flyers

Chicago Blackhawks, $625 Million

The Chicago Blackhawks won their last Stanley cup in 2013, bringing their total to five. This is one NHL franchise with something that no other team in the league has; exclusive bars all over the city. These bars are strictly for Blackhawk games, in which fans gather to watch their team win. There will not be another game on when the Blackhawks are playing. This team is owned by the Wirtz Corporation.

vancouver

Vancouver Canucks, $700 Million

This is the third Canadian team in the top 10. It’s owned by Canucks Sports Entertainment. The team has been established since the 1940s, but they were not introduced into the NHL until 1970. The Canucks have yet to win a Stanley Cup, but they have been able to claim 9 division championships as well as 3 conference championships, making them one of the most successful teams in the league.

canadiens

Montreal Canadiens, $775 Million

This is one of the oldest teams in the NHL, as they were founded in 1909. This team has 24 Stanley Cups, showing that they are big winners and the game is more than just a game to this Montreal team. The Molson family owns the Canadiens, and they have an official fan club. The fan club goes by the name le Club de hockey Canadiens, and they’re one of the most profitable and famous teams in all of Canada.

rangers

New York Rangers, $850 Million

The New York Rangers are the first NHL team to ever win a Stanley Cup. Since their 1926 introduction, the Rangers have won 4 Stanley Cups, the last one earned in 1994. So while it’s been a while since the Rangers have won, they’ve not been sitting idle. Owned by the Madison Square Garden Company, the franchise is one of the better ones in the US, with plenty of division and conference wins, as well as one of the biggest followings in the country.

toronto

Toronto Maple Leafs, $1.15 Billion

The most valuable team in the NHL is the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs are the only team in the franchise worth more than a billion dollars, and that’s because they are big winners. The team has 13 Stanley Cups, though none have been won since 1967. However, they do have the second most wins in the league, second only to the Canadiens. Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment owns the team.
