Tower Bridge in London’s $1 Million Upgraded Glass Walkway

The Great Britain team lead the boats under Tower Bridge

The Tower Bridge is the most famous and recognized bridge in all of England. The bridge sits over the River Thames and is very close  in location to the Tower of London. The bridge feautres two iconic towers that are connected by high walkways at the top, with a vehicle drawbridge that opens for boats to pass through. The bridge is a staple in the country and was a constant picture of the 2012 Olympic Games in London when the bridge featured the five rings suspended from it’s upper walkways.

The tower bridge is now upgrading once again and giving sightseers even more to look at with it’s new glass bottom walkway. The walkway offers a new perspective for those unafraid of heights; allowing them to gaze down with a birds eye view of the traffic, boats, and bridge mechanics. The new walkway is 11 meters long and only two meters wide but it brings a new feeling and design to the bridge that will entice visitors to check it out.

The sides of the walkway are also open, offering those with a fear of heights and unwilling to look down a beautiful view of London all around them. Each of the walkway’s glass panels weighs 1,168 pounds, so nobody has to worry about the glass giving out or being unable to support the weight of multiple people standing on them at once.

The new glass bottom walkway on the Tower Bridge will be open to the public starting December 1st of this year. Offering a new view to the bridge gives it a new reason to bring in tourists and is following in the footsteps of other monuments (such as the Eiffel Tower, CN Tower, and Grand Canyon) by offering these birds eye perspectives. The entire upgrade cost $1 million, but will surely bring in a surplus of visitors.
