New Survey Reveals Fear Associated with Vacation Rentals

Ski Vacation Rental

Those who ski frequently can appreciate the classic lodge look or even a rented condo overlooking the slopes as a first choice for accommodations on their trips.  Often times skiers opt for these kinds of settings rather than a classic hotel or resort.  Vacation rentals are becoming the preferred choice for skiers and there are no signs of slowing down.  However, a new survey shows that people are a bit more apprehensive than they used to be about the rentals.  One question seems to be a major turning point in the decision making process: Is the rental property managed by the owner directly, or is it managed by a vacation rental management company?  Turns out that depending on the answer, a customer’s experience is hugely impacted before and after.

A survey of more than 7,100 people by Ski.com in collaboration with Wyndham Vacation Rentals illustrates the fear travelers have when it comes to vacation rentals. The results showed that:

  • 38 percent fear being misled by photos that misrepresent the unit’s location and/or interior
  • 26 percent are afraid of renting a dirty unit
  • 23 percent worry scammers will steal their payment
  • 13 percent report their biggest concern is either a lack of housekeeping and in-unit amenities, navigating a difficult check-in or not having onsite management

“Booking a vacation rental directly from an owner can expose travelers to unnecessary risks that can be easily avoided by booking through Ski.com,” said Kathy Harding, Ski.com managing director of hospitality. “Why gamble on a rental that might be risky from booking through check out? At Ski.com, we know the ins and outs of our vast collection of vacation rentals, and we ensure travelers get the accountability, cleanliness and security they cannot necessarily count on when renting from a stranger.”

Speaking from personal experience, renting out a property directly from the owner can be extremely “shady” to say the least.  I’ll never forget the exchange of the keys.  They were mailed to be in an empty envelope and the whole thing almost felt like some kind of weird drug transaction.  I guess I wanted it to be bit more “professional” considering I was spending good money to rent the place.  And when my party left the lodge it was as if I was leaving an abandoned building to be robbed.  The whole thing felt weird.

Often times when you go with the pros you feel like you’re getting your money’s worth as well as the best accommodations possible.  I think that the ski goer community is right to have these concerns and turning to a Ski.com is a logical step if you’re thinking about renting out a place.   And if you’re thinking of renting out your place?  You might as well turn to a pro and let them handle it.  It’s worth the expense.
