Care To Live off the Grid? Visit one of These WiFi-Free Destinations

Off The Grid Locations

There is a growing movement around the world where individuals are choosing to move to live in rural, remote, and exotic locations that are “off the grid”. That is to say, areas where there is no electricity, no WiFi, no running water, and you’ve have to live off the land to make life work. While that is a scary thought for most, for some it is extremely appealing. A variety of companies are popping up to help people live off the grid. There are plenty of tiny homes that can be built that are powered by solar and wind energy and are heated by wood-burning fireplaces. Tesla Motors has even announced plans to build a large battery for homes allowing them to go off the grid. Living off the grid is certainly a massive lifestyle change, however it can be extremely rewarding. If you are looking to make the move, or to just take a vacation away from everything, there are a variety of locations around the world where you can live off the grid for a few weeks to see what it is like. We are going to take a look at some beautiful resorts and remote islands that are disconnected from the world, free of all things WiFi and cellphone related.

River’s End Resort – Jenner, California

rivers end resort

Depending on where you live, you don’t have to travel too far for our first location on the list. When the hustle and bustle of California can become too overwhelming, the northern part of the state is filled with amazing forests and vistas. About two hours north of San Francisco is the quaint and quit River’s End Resort. Located on a small bank overlooking the nearby Russian River where it feeds into the Pacific Ocean, this resort can give you the experience of what it’s like living off the grid. The resort was built in 1927 and it is a small complex of cabins for adults only. There is no cell service in the area, no cable television, and no internet. It’s just you and nature out here, however it’s not extremely rustic. There’s a pretty nice restaurant in the resort and all the cabins are nicely decorated and the resort is located near a few vineyards and the Armstrong Redwoods State Park.

UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa – Trancoso, Brazil

UXUA

If the last location was too tame for you, and you want a more exotic location, than the UXUA Casa Hotel & Spa is a good choice. This is a super small resort that is comprised of only a handful of small villas that are located right near the beach in the small fishing town of Trancoso in Brazil. To get there you’ve got to fly into Porto Seguro and then from there, you take an hour-long, off-road car ride through the jungle to reach the town. So saying that its “off the grid” is an understatement. Still don’t be put off as the town is very charming, the beaches are amazing, and the hotel is still very luxurious and comfortable. Prices start at around $418 per night, and it’s a great place to get away from the world of technology. You can explore the local area, swim at the hotel’s pool, or enjoy the bar. So while you are in a remote location, there are still plenty of comfortable amenities to enjoy here.

Laucala Island Resort – Taveuni, Fiji

Laucala Island

Fiji is extremely beautiful and amazing, and it is about as remote as you can get. On the island of Taveuni is the Laucala Island Resort, a private island resort that offers a luxury experience that’s off the grid. Now it is really expensive to stay here (around $4,600 per night for two, all-inclusive), but if you can spare it the resort is fairly spectacular. There are only 25 thatched-roof villas in total that are scattered among the remote island that is most underdeveloped. You’ve got to fly into Fiji, and then take one of the resorts private airplanes from the Nadi airport to get here, but it is worth it. The resort is filled with everything you’d expect a premium beach resort to have including mini-submarine tours of the nearby reefs. You certainly will not be uncomfortable here, and you can get away from your cellphone and computer as there is no service.

Dunton River Camp – Dunton, Colorado

Dunton River Camp

For a more rustic, yet still comfortable off the grid location, the Dunton River Camp in Colorado is another great destination. The camp is located on an old cattle ranch from the 1800’s and they own over 500-acres of land. The camp is comprised of “luxury tents” that are just feet away from the Dolores River. There’s no cell service here, but there is plenty to do from horseback riding and hiking to mountain biking or relaxing in the natural hot springs. You get a more authentic experience here and you’ll totally be immersed in nature.
