Komi is Ranked Most Expensive Greek Restaurant in the United States

Most Expensive Greek Restaurant

On an unassuming street in Dupont Circle in DC sits the Greek restaurant Komi, between a boutique and a CVS.  Komi is not only considered the most expensive Greek restaurant in the United States, but is ranked as the 23rd most expensive overall restaurant in the country.

The average bill clocks in at $440.  There is no menu published on their website nor will you receive a menu when you are there.  You eat what they serve you and the food is prepared at the chef’s discretion.  And don’t plan on celebrating in a large group.  The restaurant only accommodates parties no larger than four people and they insist on a policy of “no photos”. They also offer an optional wine pairing for an additional $70.

The meal starts with a selection of “mezzethakia” which is a series of light, small dishes.  As one progresses through the “mezzethakia”, the flavors become heartier and lead up to the entrees which are all served family style.  Classic and intriguing desserts are also served at the end of the dinner service.

While the dishes are small, they are numerous and quite adventurous.  Sweet breads, sea urchin, octopus, rabbit and suckling pig are often served.  Chef Johnny Monis and his wait staff are not overbearing but quietly ready to help and assist.  At the start of each meal, they explain how the food will start off light and small and grow to more robust and hearty.  “You’ll be in our hands tonight” and “Ready” are often what they tell the clientele as the meal begins.

Despite the cost and the small parties they accommodate, reservations are hard to get and the restaurant books up quickly.  Their suggestion is to reserve as early as possible at least one month in advance of when you would like to come to Komi.

Komi is located at 1509 17th St. NW, Washington DC  (202) 332-9200
