Having lived in cities on the east coast and west coast I can tell you one thing; it’s expensive no matter what ocean you fancy. It’s no mystery that New York City is one of the most expensive cities in the world. In fact, if you’re keeping score at home, New York City is considered the fifth most expensive city in the world to live in. Knowing that, it should come as no surprise that the city houses some of the most expensive buildings in the world as well.
New Construction Manhattan, a luxury real estate company, thought we might be curious to know the most expensive buildings in the Big Apple so they compiled a list based on closed sales and average price per square foot. The numbers are truly staggering. The price people pay per square foot in NYC could get you a palace in Idaho, but then again it’s all about living in the middle of the action isn’t it? Let’s give a shout out to One57, a still under-construction building that recently sold a penthouse for $90 million. That price tag came out to be about $3,548 per square foot. Here are the top five.
5. Superior Ink – $3,901/sq. ft.
Superior Ink is a full-service, luxury condominium development in the West Village that consists of 52 incredible dwellings facing the Hudson River. The building has just about anything and is probably the most-accommodating for families on this entire list. With everything at your fingertips and a beautiful view, Superior Ink cracks the list at #5.
4. 18 Gramercy Park South – $4,042/sq. ft.
In 2013, 18 Gramercy Park South was named the most-expensive new development in New York City. The owner of the Houston Rockets bought a $42 million penthouse in the building setting a record for most expensive condo sold downtown. The prices continue to rise as 18 Gramercy is described as the idea location for many in the city.
3. Residences at Mandarin Oriental – $4,044/sq. ft.
These 66 exclusive residences sit atop the North Tower at the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle. Described as five-star luxury living, most of the units sell for over $50 million. The facilities are unparallelled in the city. It has everything from white-gloved concierge to a forty thousand square foot fitness facility.
2. The South Tower at Time Warner Center – $4,166/sq. ft.
The property, which was developed by AREA Property Partners, consists of two 750 foot towers bridged by a multi-storied atrium and several upscale retail shops. The property has the highest listed market value in New York City as of 2006 at $1.1 billion.
1. 15 Central Park West – $5,653/ sq. ft.
You’ve most likely heard the three words together…. Central – Park – West. There’s a reason you have and it’s because it houses some of the biggest names out there. It’s the most expensive joint in NYC and if you’re living there you might bump into Sting, Bob Costas, Denzel Washington, Goldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein and more. It’s an absolutely ridiculous place to live offering an in-house chef, skylit pool and private screening room.
