Inside The Ace Hotel New York: A Haven For Artists

Ace Hotel New York 1

Ace Hotel is a small chain of luxury boutique hotels that are based out of Portland, Oregon. The company was founded in 1999 and they set out to create hotels for people that were apart of the creative class (i.e. artists, musicians, writers, etc.). They wanted to create affordable and chic hotels that were downright cool. Today they have hotels in Palm Springs, Portland, Panama, Seattle, London, Los Angeles, and New York. We are going to look at their New York hotel and see what makes these hotels so special.

The Ace Hotel New York is located in a historic building from 1904 in Midtown Manhattan. This location is extremely attractive as patrons have easy access to a variety of surrounding activities. The first thing that you will notice when traveling and stepping foot into the Ace Hotel New York is its unique and creative lobby. They take design and stylistic influences for the interior that draws from something I would describe as “modern creative Americana”. These really are hotels for artists as they all feature local artwork throughout the hotel, no matter which location. This isn’t a Ritz-Carlton by any means, however this hotel is downright cool. This is the hotel that the hip indie band comes to party and stay after playing some gig at a night club.

The hotel features a Stumptown Coffee Shop, a cool bar, and The Breslin restaurant led by head-chef April Bloomfield. There is ample space to relax and catch up on your novel here at the Ace Hotel, and it is a popular hangout spot for many people. The hotel also offers a variety of different rooms. The most basic room has twin bunkbeds, a private bathroom, a mini refrigerator, and wireless internet. For slightly more you can upgrade to the “mini” room that has all the same amenities as the bunkbed rooms, however this just has one full bed.

The most expensive and expansive room that the Ace Hotel New York offers is the Loft Suite. Like the name implies it is essentially a loft apartment with ample room to spread out and relax. The suite is located on the corner of the building and offers 711 square feet of room.

The suite has hardwood floors and great views of Broadway and 29th street. The suite has a full sized living area, vintage furniture, a record player, a loaded Smeg refrigerator, a minibar, high-speed internet, a flat screen tv, and a large bathroom complete with a tub and French doors.

Rates for rooms at the Ace Hotel start at around $199 for the basic bunkbed room, and climb up to around $839 for the larger Loft Suite. Sure there are more expensive, and luxurious hotels in New York. However some people prefer the Ace Hotel over premium luxury hotels. Yea there isn’t a spa, and you probably wont see S-Class Mercedes parked out front, but that is to be expected. Ace Hotels want to give artists and creative people a hotel of their own, and this is exactly that. Hang out in the bar long enough and I’m sure you will meet some cool rock musicians and poets.
