Which Bottle of Macallan Costs More than the Average Richest 1% Salary in the U.S.?

The Macallan distillery was founded back in 1824 out of Craigellachie, Moray. They create single malt SCotch whiskey and are an official subsidiary of the Edrington Group. Macallan is a top international scotch whiskey brand and currently offers nine different products. At the beginning of this year, in January, a bottle of Macallan set the world record for being the most expensive single malt whiskey ever and sold for more money than the average 1% salary in the United States.

On January 18th, a 6-liter “M” Decanter by Lalique was auctioned off by Sotheby’s in New York in Hong Kong for a HK price of $4.9 million, which converts to $631,850 USD. At that price, this transaction makes the “M” Decanter the most expensive bottle of single malt whiskey ever. The product was named “Constantine” and the design of the decanter is one of four in the entire world. Two have been archived by the company while another was pre-sold to a private collector, making this the only bottle available to the public.

According to Forbes, in 2013,  the 1% earned “about $394,000 or about $1.5 million in liquid assets. Post-tax an retirement savings, that’s about $220,000 a year while they are working.” Either way, this bottle of Macallan is nearly double that income amount and beat out the previous record that was set in 2010.

The Macallan product is extremely unique and very rare. The bottle itself is one of four in the world and is filled with brilliantly aged single malt whiskey from Macallan. The decanter is a high quality product that boasts a new shape and is easily worthy of the World Record. A portion of the proceeds are even going to be donated towards charities in Hong Kong.
