5 of The Most Expensive Wines From California

California Wine

Wine is one of the oldest forms of alcohol known to man, and many would consider it to be the most luxurious version of alcohol. Wine is produced throughout the world and it comes in many different flavors and types. While you can get bottles of wine for $7 dollars, you can also easily drop $1,000 dollars on a bottle. France and Italy are often considered to produce some of the best wine in the world, but wines from California are giving them a run for their money. Given California’s vast geography and their incredible weather, it makes for a great location to have a vineyard. There are many, well-known vineyards and wine brands from California, and then there are also smaller ones that produce extremely high-quality wines in limited quantities. Some of these vineyards only produce maybe 75 cases a year, so naturally their wine is quite expensive. We are going to take a look at some of the most expensive wine that comes from California.

5. Colgin Cellars

Colign Cellars is a small winery/vineyard that is located in Napa Valley. They only produce red wine and their bottles often sell out almost instantly. That is because they only release maybe 1,000 cases per year at the most. Among one of the standout wines is their Cabernet Sauvignon. You can expect to pay around $300 dollars for a bottle.

4. Marcassin Estate

Marcassin Estate is a small winery located in the Sonoma region of California. It’s owned by Helen Turley, who has often been described as one of America’s greatest winemakers. They established their brand in 1990, and have quickly became one of the best. They only produce a very limited amount of bottles each year, and their Chardonnay is one of the most expensive one’s. It’s very difficult to find, but if you can, you can expect to pay around $400 dollars or so for a bottle.

3. Grace Family Vineyards

From Napa Valley, Grace Family Vineyards is a very small, boutique winery that has been in business since 1978. They produce some of the more popular wines in the area, and only produce a Cabernet Sauvignon. The most recent vintage dates back to 2012 and has been sold out, as they produce less that 400 cases each year. At auction, a bottle can easily go for upwards of $700 dollars.

2. Ghost Horse Vineyards

Lead by prominent winemaker Todd Anderson, Ghost Horse Vineyards is an extremely small winery that makes less than 75 cases of wine each year. Like many wineries in California, their specialty is a Cabernet Sauvignon. Their current vintage is going for about $500 dollars, but older vintages can fetch for upwards of $1,000.

1. Screaming Eagle

Screaming Eagle is probably the most famous winery within Napa Valley, and they continue to release some of the regions most expensive wines. They produce just 500 cases of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc each year. But the thing is, you can’t even buy them. Their wine is only available to those on their mailing list or for Michelin-starred restaurants in California. In fact, they currently have a waiting list…to get on the mailing list for their wine. Their bottles are extremely hard to come by, and you can sometimes find them at auctions for over $1,500 dollars.
