Once Upon a Time, Maserati Made a Supercar: Meet The MC12

Maserati MC12

Maserati is a luxury Italian automobile manufacturer that was established in 1914. Compared to competitors, they are a fairly small company and primarily produce luxury sedans and grand tourers. However back in the day Maserati used to participate in racing, but it eventually moved away from that. While their current lineup is impressive, they don’t make any supercars and many people do not even recognize them as a supercar company. Okay, that’s fair enough. However the company did make a supercar, and it was called the MC12

The MC12 was a supercar produced by Maserati that was made to mark their return to racing after a long hiatus. The vehicle was very advanced when it came out in 2004, and it was pretty cool. The MC12 was actually designed and built on the chassis of an Enzo Ferrari, however Maserati did change it up quite a bit.

These mid-engine supercars featured a 6.0 liter V12 engine that was also based off an Enzo’s. That engine was able to provide the car with 62o hp and 481 lb-ft of torque. It could go from 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds and had a top speed of 205 miles per hour. However it was still slower than an Enzo as it was also much larger.

When the car was finally produced Maserati only made 50 production vehicles for the public and 12 others to be used for professional racing. The vehicle also costed around $680,000 dollars, making it a very expensive car. Still the car sold out before the first one rolled of the production line. The MC12 saw 40 wins at 94 races that it was featured in. Despite that many people criticized the car for being too expensive, too big, and too difficult to handle. Still it was an important car for Maserati, as it was over 37 years since the company had participated in races until they released the MC12. These cars are extremely rare to see, and despite the challenges the MC12 faced, we hope that Maserati will once again produce a supercar.
