The Ferrari 612 Scagietti was a massive 2-door fastback coupe that Ferrari made between 2004 and 2011 in memory of Sergio Scaglietti, a prominent designer for Ferrari who designed some of the best Ferraris in the 1950’s and the 1960’s. The 612 Scagnetti was another example of Ferrari saying that not all of their cars are flashy 2 seater supercars; The 612 Scagietti could actually fit four people in it, something most Ferraris do not do. Dubbed “The Gentleman’s GT” this Ferrari faced some criticism when it first came out for being to modest, girly, and “not aggressive enough”, however as time went on more and more grew accustomed to it.
Getting right into the specs, this $250,000 + Ferrari was the second Ferrari entirely made out of aluminum, and the first one to feature a massive DOHC 48-valve 5.7 litre V12 engine. That large engine provide the 16 foot, 4,100 plus pound vehicle with 533 brake horsepower and 434 pounds-feet of torque. This allowed the car to go from 0-62 miles per hour in 4.2 seconds, while not the quickest Ferrari its still pretty fast. The Scaglietti also had pretty great weight distribution with 54% of its weight on the rear wheels. The Scaglietti could also have a large moonroof. However, like nearly all gasoline based supercars, it has a pretty dismal miles per gallon with 10 in the city, and 16 on the highway. Although I am sure you aren’t worrying about that if you can afford this car.
The vehicle was designed by the Pininfarina team, with designer Frank Stevenson at its head. While people criticized the design of this vehicle, it eventually caught on. In my opinion the vehicle is beautifully understated in the best ways possible. Its gentle lines provide this car with a level of sophistication that other Ferraris don’t have. Now do not get me wrong, Ferrari is my favorite supercar company and I think design some of the best looking vehicles. However, when you compare this to say a 458 Spyder or an Enzo (beautiful cars, in their own respect), the Scaglietti is just so elegant; it is a gentleman’s car. Ferrari replaced the Scaglietti with their new FF, however in my opinion that car looks like they took a hot hatch and threw a v12 in it; the nose just seems silly and awkward to me. Regardless of my opinion, the Scaglietti is conservative and tame, but in a great way. It is a car that a respectable 40-50 year old would drive, and it can fit the family as well. This isn’t the Ferrari that a 16 year old would buy a poster of to put up in his room, and if you ask me, sometimes thats a good thing.
