Audi Unveils Plans to Produce an All-Electric Luxury SUV

Audi E-tron Quattro

The world of automobiles is quickly changing as we are finding ourselves in the days of the modern electric vehicle. Hybrid cars and even fully-electric cars are becoming increasingly popular, and they are certainly the future of the automobile industry. To keep up with current trends and to stay competitive, Audi has recently unveiled that they have plans to produce an all-electric luxury SUV.

As with many new automobiles, this new vehicle will start with a concept car. Audi says that they will show off their electric SUV concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show which takes place during the end of September. Nicknamed the Audi “e-tron Quattro concept”, the car will be designed entirely from the ground up. Audi has already released a mock sketch of what the vehicle may look like, and it seems promising.

Audi says that the e-tron Quattro will fit somewhere in-between their Q5 and Q7 in terms of size, and it will offer a standard SUV body that resembles other Audi SUVs. Audi also says that the car will be extremely aerodynamic as well, with a coefficient of drag somewhere around 0.25. The vehicle will use a series of lithium-ion batteries that will be located below the interior compartment, positioned between the vehicles two axels. Audi exclaims that the car should be able to achieve a range of 310 miles on a single charge, which is impressive compared to other electric cars that are currently on the market. The drive train will look towards their R8 e-tron supercar for reference, and the SUV will feature three electric motors. Once Audi unveils the concept car next month, they will soon start to work on releasing a production version.

This vehicle will be meant to compete with the highly-anticipated Model X from Tesla, that has still not been released after many setbacks. While similar, the Model X is more of a crossover and unlike the Audi, the Model X borrows the same platform that is used by the Model S. So it will be refreshing to see a fully-electric SUV that has been designed by the ground up. Many other automobile brands like BMW, Bentley, and Mercedes-Benz are working on offering more SUV’s and crossovers thanks to a growing worldwide demand for these types of vehicles. I’m sure Audi will do a good job with this car, and we look forward to the Frankfurt Auto Show when they finally reveal the vehicle.
