Alfa Romeo Plans its First SUV in $6 Billion Expansion

Alfa Romeo

I love Alfa Romeo. The Italian company has been producing great cars of years, that while maybe they aren’t the fastest, they are some of the most fun and enjoyable (provided they haven’t broke down). The company finally brought a car to sell in the United States after a very long hiatus, and that car is the 4C. If I could have any car right now, it would probably be that one as it is basically a $50,000 dollar supercar. The brand (who is owned by Fiat Chrysler), has been reviving itself over the years and they have just announced that they are finalizing their all new vehicle which will be a SUV-crossover, a first for the Italian company.

Alfa Romeo is known for their small, sporty cars and this new SUV will certainly be interesting. The company has plans to release a sedan later this year, and at the Detroit auto show CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed that a SUV-crossover vehicle is in the works. Better news is that the team that is engineering the vehicle are a bunch of former Ferrari managers, so saying it will be an exciting car is an understatement.

These new vehicles are part of a $6 billion dollar stimulus package for Alfa Romeo from Fiat Chrysler. That is no small number, which ensures that Fiat Chrysler is taking the Alfa Romeo brand seriously. They hope that these funds will help Alfa return to its glory days, and take the brand from the niche brand that it is today to a serious luxury automobile brand that will compete with BMW and Audi. The new SUV is expected to be launched sometime in 2016.

The demand for the 4c is strong right now and Alfa is also looking to increase production of their vehicles in addition to launching eight new vehicles by 2018. The brand also hopes to increase sales to 400,000 units per year by that time, a figure five times larger than what it currently is. Alfa will specifically be targeting the United States and Chine for their new vehicles, and I for one, cannot wait for these new cars.
