The Academy Awards is the largest event in the film industry where we see the world’s best actors, actresses, directors, and film makers receive awards for the work that they have done that year. It is also a time where we see actresses wear some of the most amazing dresses in the world. For a luxury, high-end fashion house this is a time to show off your best work. There is only so much you can do with a men’s black tuxedo, which is why we typically see actress wear more extravagant pieces. We have made a list of the most expensive dresses that were worn to the Academy Awards, all of which are truly remarkable. But can you guess how much the most expensive one costs? Let’s take a look:
10. Anne Hathaway – $80,000
Anne Hathaway wore this beautiful red dress to the 2011 Academy Awards, and it was truly something. Made by Valentino, this extravagant red dress was made entirely from silk faille. The real shocker was her necklace from Tiffany & Co. that costed more than $10 million dollars.
9. Cate Blanchett – $100,000
Cate Blanchett showed up to the 2014 Academy Awards in this stunning dress from Armani Privé. The dress is beige in color and features many Swarovski crystals. Costing $100,000 dollars it certainly was expensive, however her total outfit was a bit more. When you include her shoes, the dress, jewelry, and make-up, her whole outfit was estimated to cost $18.1 million dollars, the most ever.
8. Charlize Theron – $100,000
Sporting a fairly minimal dress, Charlize Theron worn this amazing gown to the 2013 Oscars. The all-white dress was custom made for Charlize by Christian Dior, and supposedly costed $100,000. The dress was noted for its clean lines and the crystal embellishment.
7. Jessica Biel – $100,000
Jessica Biel is also accredited with one of the more expensive dresses work to the Academy Awards when she showed up to the 2014 Oscars. While other actresses have sported more elaborate attire, this dress is definitely more simple. Made from Chanel, the $100,000 “Shimmer Dress” heightened Biel’s already superb radiance to new levels.
6. Kate Winslet – $100,000
Back in 2007, actress Kate Winslet chose to worn this mint-green dress to the Academy Awards. Produced by Valentino with an estimated cost around $100,ooo dollars, this figure-hugging dress went on to win the award for the “best dress” of the entire event.
5. Audrey Hepburn – $131,292
Audrey Hepburn sported this dress to the 1954 Academy Awards, where she also won an Oscar for her role in Roman Holiday. This lace gown was actually a modified gown from the one that Hepburn worn in the film and it was designed by Edith Head. While the original price is not known, it was sold in an auction in 2011 for $131,292.
4. Elizabeth Taylor – $167,500
The late Elizabeth Taylor also makes our list with the dress that she wore to the 1970 Academy Awards. This blue dress was highly talked about at the time, and like Hepburn’s, it was also designed by Edith Head. While we don’t know how much it costed back then, it was auctioned off for $167,500 dollars.
3. Cate Blanchett – $200,000
Cate Blanchett seems to have a thing for extremely expensive dresses, as she pops up on our list a second time with this dress. Blanchett wore this amazing dress to the 2007 Academy Awards, and it certainly was a talking piece at the time. Like her other dress this was also designed by Armani Privé. The silver and black mesh dress featured Swarovski crystals, a black clustered floral motif, and a tulle overlay. It costed a crisp $200,000.
2. Nicole Kidman – $2 Million
Back in 1997, Nicole Kidman wore this olive green/gold dress to the Oscars. The dress was from Christian Dior Haute Couture, and it definitely generated a lot of buzz. The dress did not cost Kidman anything, as she was actually paid to wear it. She wanted to see how much money brands would spend to put their creation on celebrities. Apparently it costed Christian Dior a cool $2 million.
1. Jennifer Lawrence – $4 Million
Finally the most expensive dress ever worn to an Academy Awards event, and of of the most extravagant for that matter, was the one worn by Jennifer Lawrence at the 2013 Oscars. As soon as Jennifer showed up, it was clear that her dress was going to make an impact just by how large it was. This strapless dress was designed by Christian Dior, and costed around $4 million dollars. As Lawrence was the face for Miss Dior the brand decided to go all out with this dress. They may have gone to far as she tripped going up on stage to receive her Oscar, as the dress was so difficult to maneuver in. Still it is definitely one-of-a-kind, and the most expensive ever worn.
