Rich Kids of Tehran gained a lot of popularity on Instagram in the past month, and it’s been shut down as a result of that media coverage. As of Thursday the photos of the wealthiest kids in Tehran were deleted and a tweet was issued to say that the account had been shut down due to false publicity. The page, which features photos of rich kids and their luxuries, gained worldwide attention from national media outlets such as Huffington Post and several other major news outlets.
Tehran is a place that is typically considered very poor and without much. The photos of the kids on this Instagram did not depict the same place that most of us know to exist. Instead, photos were shown of kids driving Ferraris, wearing expensive clothes, partying in clubs and driving other luxury vehicles and hanging out in massive mansions in luxury pools. None of the girls in the pictures were dressed in traditional hijab, which is a law that is very strictly enforced in all public places.
The pictures do not show what we westerners know of the area. Instead, wealth, decadence and over-abundance are portrayed in the photos of the rich teens and young adults in the Tehran photos. The website was published barely a month ago, and it was shut down without any warning or notice after so much media attention was brought to it. Each of the more than 300 photos of kids and their luxurious lifestyles was deleted. Some media outlets had already taken photos from the site, which have already been published in a number of different locations showing off the wealth and extremist lifestyles of some of the most fortunate kids in the area. Photos from this area traditionally show great poverty, homelessness, warfare and hunger. To say this site was shocking is an understatement.
