Most people have heard the name Carlos Slim before, but you may not know how he is. That’s all going to change today. Mr. Slim is a business magnate, investor and philanthropist with extensive holdings in numerous companies through his conglomerate, Grupo Carso, SA de CV. Slim has amassed interests in fields of communications, media, technology, retailing and finance. In case you couldn’t figure it out, Slim is awfully wealthy.
According to reports this year Mr. Slim and his family are the richest in the world. As head of the family, Carlos’s children are now in charge of a lot of the companies under Slim’s umbrella. Included in those companies are America Movil and stakes in KPN of the Netherlands and Telekom Austria. How much is the Slim family worth… a cool $73 billion.
For several years, Slim was the richest man in the world. This past year he was overtaken by Bill Gates at $76 billion. However, Slim still retains the title of world’s richest family. Perhaps the most interesting detail in the ‘richest family in the world’ is that Slim’s family is first by a long shot – the next richest family in the world clocks in around $30 million.
