Rolls-Royce Planning Plug-In Hybrid

Detroit Auto Show Previews Newest Car Models

The world is going green. It was only a matter of time before luxury cars jumped on boat as well. Granted, the market for high-end vehicles like Rolls-Royce, Maybach, and Bentley isn’t very large as is, but if there are any high-end luxury car buyers that are concerned with saving the planet – Rolls-Royce may be sure to snatch them up over the next three years.

Rolls-R0yce is already begun the initial phases to launch its first-ever plug-in model within the next three years. Rolls-Royce’s CEO, Torsten Muller-Otvos, described hybrid technology “essential in two years, maybe not from customer demand but through legal regulation on emissions,” if the car wants to continue using V12 powerplants. As we mentioned above, it’s a small market, but it will be done.

Rolls-Royce has already entertained the idea of an all-electric version of its Phantom flagship, the 102EX, but the idea failed miserably amongst its existing clients. Right now, it’s unclear as to what model Rolls-Royce could first implement a plug-in hybrid powertrain into – Many believe that the Phantom is a possible candidate.

The good news is that Rolls’ parent company BMW is already well ahead of the ‘go-green’ hybrid vehicles. It’d be reasonable to think that BMW would be instrumental in absorbing the immense cost of developing and delivering a high-end hybrid car to the market.
