Five Things You Didn’t Know about Nokia Maps

Nokia

When many people think of Nokia, they think of the phones they had when they were teenagers and cell phones first became popular – and a lot smaller than they were back in the day. However, Nokia is a brand that’s changed significantly over the years. Today, Nokia is in talks with Samsung to debut Nokia maps on the new Samsung smartwatch. Here are five interesting facts about Nokia maps you probably don’t know.

Nokia Maps is Precise

When Nokia was working on the map product, the product manager wore walking shoes to the office on a daily basis and used the map repeatedly. His plan was to make sure that over the 50 km he walked during this time that the map was exact and precise down to the very last step.

It’s Got a New Name

It’s no longer known as Nokia maps. Instead, it’s known now as Nokia Here. The name changed because it was a way for them to differentiate themselves from the competition such as Google maps. It’s worked for the company, as its success continues to grow.

It’s a Big Map

The Here covers more than 190 countries. There are very few places in the world you can go with the Nokia Here maps and no find out exactly where you are. The map offers turn-by-turn navigation as well as information that tourists often need when they are in town visiting for a while.

Microsoft Doesn’t Own It

Most people are aware of the fact that Microsoft purchased Nokia back in 2013. What they are not aware of, however, is the fact that Microsoft did not purchase the maps portion of the company. While it is a part of Nokia, which is now owned by Microsoft, it’s not a part of the Microsoft family.

You Don’t Need the Internet

What’s truly unique about the Nokia map is that it doesn’t require an internet connection to work. It can be downloaded onto a device that allows it to work offline, which is a unique feature that sets it apart from the crowd. It’s just one more reason the Samsung Smartwatch is going to integrate the piece of technology.
