Popular People

20. You were popular growing up or are popular/well-liked now

People who are well-liked, popular, and have a lot of friends are more likely to make more money that those who weren’t. Apparently a study conducted in 2009 by the Institute for Social and Economic Research found that those who were more popular in high school made 10% more money that their unpopular counterparts. Being someone who is nice, respected, and well-liked can increase your chances of being rich, as it would seem. So if you needed another reason to hate on the popular kids, well now you know that they probably will make more money than you.

People who are thinkers and who are more open-minded than others are probably more likely to succeed and become rich than those who aren’t. When you are an open-minded person, you’re more likely to try new things and find solutions to your problems. Both of those can lead to an increased net worth, and when you examine some of the richest and most successful people in the world, they are also very open-minded about things.

18. You have blond hair, but in particular, you are a blond woman

Blond hair is always stereotyped as the most desirable hair color, and whether or not that’s true, you could have a leg up on the rest if you have blond hair. But in particular, you are more likely to be wealthy if you’re a blond woman. A study conducted by David W. Johnston in 2010 titled “Physical Appearance and Wages: Do Blondes Have More Fun?”, found that blond women earn up to 7% more money that women who aren’t blond and they are also more likely to marry someone that’s wealthier than them.

hard workers

17. You’ve always been a hard worker

While there can be shortcuts for certain things in life, hard work always pays off. You’ve always been someone that strives for success, put your best foot forward, and most importantly, applied consistent levels of work to reach your goals. Being a hard worker in your studies, your hobbies, and at your job is always a good trait to posses. People that work hard are more likely to be successful and richer than those who don’t. It’s that simple.

Smoking

16. You don’t smoke

Smoking is not only harmful for your health, but it may also hurt your chances at becoming rich. A study conducted in 2004 called “The Wealth Effects of Smoking Tobacco Control” found many interesting things about smoking and a persons wealth. The study found that for every year an adult spends as a smoker, their net worth is decreased by 4%. Smoking is an expensive habit, and apparently the study also found that nonsmokers have a net worth that’s about 50% higher compared to those that smoke.

Like it or not, being attractive can help you become rich and wealthy. A 1994 study called “Beauty and the Labor Market” found that attractive people, both men and women, are more likely to earn more money than those who are average or below average in the looks department in addition to having better chances at securing higher-paying jobs. The study found that attractive men earn 9% more than their unattractive male counterparts, and attractive women earn 4% more than unattractive women. So being good looking is another sign that you may become rich.

The News

14. You’re an informed individual that’s grounded in reality

Being informed and keeping up with what’s going on in the world is always a good quality to posses, and one that is shared by many millionaires and billionaires in the world. If you’re someone that keeps up with the news and knows about current events, you’re probably more likely to become wealthy. These types of people are grounded in reality, and often make well-informed decisions. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett start out their days by reading The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal and they’re definitely not alone.

Saving Money

13. You’re a fiscally conservative and financially conscious person

I’m not talking about politics here, but rather the fact that you are someone that saves their money and are responsible when it comes to spending it. Those that save their money, understand how banks work, what the stock market is all about, etc. are more likely to become wealthy later in life. Saving money is always a good thing, and a smart decision. So if you’re someone that has their finances in order and a savings account, you share a quality that nearly all wealthy individuals posses.

If you’re someone that’s tall, it can definitely be an advantage to getting rich.

Born into wealth

10. You were born rich

This should come to no ones surprise, but if you’re born rich or born into wealth, then the chances for you to stay rich are extremely high. Rich households have more resources to provide to their children to ensure that they will have an above-average quality of life. One study called “Getting Ahead or Losing Ground: Economic Mobility in America” found that 54% of American children who are born rich and then go on to earn a college degree remain in the top economic bracket.

Debt

9. You avoid debt

People that can avoid debt, pay off their debts, and manage their expenses are more likely to become wealthy than those who fail to do so. It’s really quite straightforward: if you have a lot of debts and are in debt, it’s more difficult to become financially successful. It’s not rocket science.

drinking

8. Drinking can actually help you become rich

You would think that it would be the complete opposite, but drinking alcohol might actually help your chances of getting wealthy. A study in 2006 that was conducted by Bethany Peters and Edward Stringham for the Journal of Labor Research found that drinkers can earn between 10% to 14% more money compared to those that abstain from alcohol. So perhaps drinking isn’t the worst thing?

Intelligent

7. You’re intelligent

This one is obviously a no-brainer, but people who are intelligent and have an above average IQ are more likely to become wealthy than those who aren’t. Intelligence impacts nearly all aspects of life, and being smart definitely helps when it comes to business and making money. There are plenty of scientific studies out there that back this up, and it makes sense. If you’re really smart, your chances of becoming rich improve significantly.

marriage

6. You’re in a happy, healthy marriage

Being married, especially when the marriage is between two loving couples, is another potential indicator that you might become rich. Research has indicated that married couples have a significantly higher net worth when compared to those who aren’t married. Additionally, a study called “Marriage and Divorce’s Impact on Wealth” that was published in the Journal of Sociology in 2005 found that divorced people experience a 77% drop in wealth. So getting and staying married can help you earn more money, but if things go wrong, a divorce will significantly hinder your overall wealth. It’s a double-edged sword.

Investor

5. You’ve made investments/know how to invest in things

Rich and successful people all know it, you’ve got to spend money to make money. Plenty of individuals have made their fortunes solely through investing, and it’s a quality that nearly all wealthy people have.

College

4. You went to an Ivy League school or any other top-tier college

Those that attended and graduated from schools like Harvard, Princeton, Duke, MIT, and Columbia are more likely to make more money than those who graduated from “normal” schools. These universities contain some of the smartest students around, and if you graduate from a school like Harvard, your chances to get a good job and then becoming wealthy are pretty great. Real Estate

3. You own property and are into real estate

A good sign that you might be rich is if you own a few different real estate properties. This is especially true if you’ve made real estate acquisitions at a young age. Only a small percentage of the population are actively involved with real estate, but most economists agree that being involved in real estate is a key factor that’s used to predict if someone will be wealthy in the future.

fitness

2. Physical fitness is very important to you

Being physically fit and active is not only extremely beneficial for your health and wellbeing, but it could be an indicator that you might become rich. When you’re truly dedicated to fitness, it shows that you are a driven, determined, and hard working individual. You don’t become Arnold Schwarzenegger overnight, and if fitness was easy, then everyone would be in shape. It takes a long time to get in shape, especially if you’re out of shape. Wealthy individuals and those that are physically fit share many of the same attributes, and they are definitely related. More so, a study has even demonstrated this. Jay Zagorsky conducted a study called “Health and Wealth: The Late-20th-century Obesity Epidemic in the U.S.” and found some very interesting results. He found that for every one-unit increase in a young individuals body mass index, they experience an 8% reduction in wealth. So essentially, the more overweight and out of shape your are, the more it harms your chances of getting rich.

STEM

1. You’re in a STEM-related job/studied a STEM in college

Another indicator that you might become rich is if you studied a STEM in college or are currently in a STEM-related career. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and these fields of studies contain some of the highest paying jobs in the world. You have to be a hard working, intelligent individual to make it in one of these fields, but if you can do that, chances are you will be rich. Being a neuroscientist or an aerospace engineer are careers that can earn you a lot of money. It’s definitely difficult, but those that go into the STEM fields have higher chances of becoming rich.
