The Ten Biggest Movie Studios In the World

studios

You may think you’re seeing a million different title cards when you go to the movies these days, but in truth, there are only a handful of studios that control the vast majority of the film’s released in Hollywood. Here are the ten largest.

10. Open Road (Market Share: 1.4%)

They’re actually owned by the Regal/AMC theaters chain, and have recently released movies like Chef, The Grey, The Host, Machete Kills and more.

9. Relativity Media (Market Share: 2.2%)

Another smaller studio that has released films such as Don Jon, Oculus, Immortals and Haywire over the last few years. “Rogue” is one of their sub-divisions.

8. The Weinstein Company (Market Share: 4.3%)

Now we’re starting to get a little bit bigger with frequent Entourage guest star, Harvey Weinstein and his company. The last few years they’ve brought us The Master, Silver Linings Playbook, Philomena, August: Osage County, Django Unchained and a host of other Oscar contenders.

7. Paramount (Market Share: 8.94%)

Moving into the big boys, Paramount has a full 9% of the market, releasing films like GI Joe, Paranormal Activity, Transformers, Mission Impossible and more.

6. Lionsgate (Market Share: 10.3%)

Lionsgate is known for their fair share of horror films, which end up doing very well at the box office, like the infinitely running Saw series. Their biggest property, however, is now without question The Hunger Games.

5. Fox (Market Share: 10.8%)

Fox obviously has a hand in both TV and film, and their movie offerings include X-Men, Avatar, Taken, Ice Age, Die Hard, Alien and formerly Star Wars, before Disney snatched it away.

4. Columbia/Tristar/Sony (Market Share: 11.2%)

It’s a big conglomeration with these three, and includes sub-divisions like Screen Gems, Sony Animation and Sony Pictures Classics. They’ve brought us Spider-Man, 21 Jump Street, Men in Black, Skyfall, Underworld and Resident Evil.

3. NBCUniversal (Market Share: 13.9%)

Most of the rest of these are all TV/film players, including NBCUniversal. Their biggest properties include classics like Jurassic Park, ET, Back to the Future, Field of Dreams and more.

2. Disney (Market Share: 15.9%)

Not much tops Disney these days between their purchase of Marvel and non-stop Dreamworks hits. I have a hunch once they bring Star Wars back, they’ll claim the number one spot. I doubt I even need to list their recent hits here from Frozen to Toy Story 3 to The Avengers to Iron Man 3.

1. Warner Bros. (Market Share: 17.1%)

Right now, Warner Bros. is still on top with the largest share of the market. They hit it big in the 2000s with the Harry Potter films, but also have released Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, all the Lord of the Rings movies, The Matrix series, Inception, Gravity, The Hangover and too many other hits to count.
