With the popularity of so many original programs on a variety of different streaming devices, Sony recently announced what they have in store for their popular Playstation console. After saying last year that there were plans to bring original content to the Playstation 4, many users were wondering when in fact the company had planned on releasing information on the strategy. Well, it seems like the wait is over, as the company finally admitted to a one-hour drama exclusively filmed for the Playstation called Powers.
An adaptation of a novel written by Brian Michael Bendis and artist Michael Avon Oeming, the show will consist of fantasy, drama and a police-like spin that has two detectives investigating the crimes of people with superhero abilities, known as “powers.”
Produced by Sony Pictures TV (quite obviously), the production company has been behind shows like Breaking Bad, Hannibal and Masters of Sex, meaning there are some bright minds that are on this project that could create quite the millions of additional revenue for the brand.
Although the show is just being announced as a release for the PS4, it has actually been in development for quite some time, previously making it to the pilot stage with FX, so the concept is one that Sony must feel strongly about—especially as the CEO of Sony Entertainment, Michael Lynton, said that the show’s budget will be on par with the likes of Showtime and HBO.
With the show being exclusive only through the PlayStation Network, users will be more inclined to buy the entire console rather and its additional gaming and online capabilities than just subscribing to a one-and-done content stream like Netflix or Hulu—or at least that’s Sony’s hope.
Although there’s obviously risk with the move, Sony believes that Powers will be held in high-regard just as original series’ on premium TV channels and other streaming networks like HBO, Showtime, Netflix and Hulu have.
It’s a huge power move in the next-gen gaming consoles, creating an all-around experience that is difficult to match for Sony’s competitors.
