Five Star Hospital Stays Can Cost up to $2000 a Night

Queen Elizabeth Hospital Offers The Latest Technological Advances In Its Care

In recent years, many Americans have struggled to provide themselves, and their families, with adequate healthcare.  Due to the rising cost of healthcare, many Americans have become uninsured or underinsured, forcing many people to pick and chose when they will seek medical help.  For anyone in this predicament the idea of paying up to $2,000 is ridiculous and unrealistic; however, for those who can afford it, several hospitals have begun to offer suite style extended stay options.  New York Presbyterian Hospital, which is the largest hospital New York City and one of the largest in the country, is one of the hospitals that offers its patients such an experience.

According to New York Presbyterian’s website the hospital has  “private suites and rooms for patients on most units for an additional cost.”  Described as “hotel-like,” New York Presbyterian’s “private accommodations” feature views of the Hudson River, private dining, and a visitors’ sitting area with a bathroom and sleeper sofa. Patients can also hire private duty nurses through the Private Duty Nursing Office for an additional cost.  An overnight stay in this area of the hospital can range anywhere from $1,200 to $2,100 per night – an expense that isn’t covered by insurance.

However, this trend in high-end hospital rooms is not exclusive to New York.  Other big cities throughout the country have begun to offer similar accommodations.  The University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Pavilion also offers suit style options, and while the price is significantly lower than New York’s offerings, it is still more expensive than the average overnight hotel stay – and again, must be paid out of pocket.  For $525 a night, patients staying in the suites at Penn Pavilion can receive concierge service, bathrobes, and gourmet meals.  Emory Hospital in Atlanta also offers suits for $275 a night which buys access to a concierge, who can assist with making appointments and other business tasks, and a pull-out couch for visitors.

There are also a few maternity wards in large cities across the country that offer soon-to-be and new mothers with luxurious stay options with Los Angeles’ Ceders-Sinai Hospital charging up to $5,100 per night with the price including a personal assistant (doula) to help care for the new born baby’s needs, three meals a day for two people, and a bathrobe.

While all of these luxurious accommodations sound great, and are more like a vacation than a hospital stay – the price tag that comes along with them do nothing more than provide most people with another reason to be thankful for good health.
