The Five Richest Alumni of Brown University

T. Boone Pickens And Ted Turner Speak On Renewable And Alternative Energy

Brown University is a prestigious school known for pumping out top tier graduates. When glancing back through the schools long history there are many notable alumni who attended; just recently, even actress Emma Watson was going to school there to seek out the highest forms of education. When perusing through the list of Brown University alumni, while I expected to see a ton of familiar names, I was amazed at just how many I didn’t know about.

These are the five richest alumni of Brown University.

5. Chung Yong-Jin – $1.3 Billion

Chung Yong-Jin is a business owner in South Korea who found the majority of his wealth through a retailing company. Last year he stepped down from his position as CEO in Shinsegae, the largest retail department store in the world, due to an investigation on the company that he was considered to be in on. Regardless, he still holds stock in the company and also puts his money into Samsung Electronics as well.

4. Jim Yong Kim – $1.4 Billion

Jim Yong Kim is a medical doctor with his PhD in Anthropology who is the head of the world bank. The World Bank provides over $30 billion for countries each year and creates developmental programs for them as well. He is currently finding ways to cut back on the World Bank’s costs and trim away any unnecessary jobs to rid the bank of its “clunky structure”.

3. Sidney Frank – $1.8 Billion

Sidney Frank passed away in 2006, but dropped out of Brown after one year and ended up creating Jagermeister and Grey Goose. Although his business was failing for the first six years, he started importing Jagermeister from Germany and it took off. After creating Grey Goose, he sold the company to Bacardi for $2.3 billion.

2. Jonathan Nelson – $1.8 Billion

Jonathan Nelson created the private equity firm Providence Equity Partners which discovers and purchases media and telecom properties as well as investing in companies (such as Warner Music Group and Hulu). Nelson seems to have his hand in a lot of different money making scenarios and has been putting his degree from Brown in economics to use.

1. Ted Turner – $2.2 Billion

At number one is Ted Turner, the creator of the Turner Broadcasting Network and CNN itself. He secretly has been building up a large amount of land owned across the country, currently sitting on over two million acres within six different states. In 1996, he sold the Turner Broadcasting Network for 7.3 billion and through ups and downs with his money, still sits at $2.2 billion.
