The United States and the United Kingdom are some of the most popular countries for travelers to visit in the world. Even if you are from those two countries, traveling within both still makes up a significant portion of the travel industry. Depending on where you go, an extended trip to these two countries can often be very expensive compared to other nations. Well recently, TravelMag.com wanted to take a look at some of the most popular and expensive travel destinations within these two countries. They examined things like the cost of transportation and the average price of hotel rooms to come up with their findings, and they are very interesting. So here are the ten most expensive travel destinations within the United Kingdom and the United States.

Most Expensive Travel Destinations In The United Kingdom:

London

5. London

You would think that London, one of the most expensive cities in the world, would be higher up on the list, but that is actually not the case. London is the go-to travel destination in the United Kingdom, and travelers can expect to pay more money compared to other locations. Given how large and influential London is, it comes to no surprise that it makes the list.

Oxford

4. Oxford

This city of Oxford in Oxfordshire is ranked next on the list as the fourth most expensive travel destination in Europe. Despite being one of the UK’s smallest cities, it has been on the rise for some years now. Given its vast historical background and the fact the city is so charming, it’s a very popular travel destination.

St. Peter Port

3. St. Peter Port

Located on the east coast of the small island of Guernsey in the English Channel, St. Peter Port is another expensive travel destination in the UK. The town has existed in some form since the days of the Romans, and given it’s unique location, it’s a very popular vacation spot. The town is extremely quaint and charming and it’s perfect for summer trips since it’s right on the water.

Bath

2. Bath 

Listed as a World Heritage Site and as a city that contains ancient Roman buildings, Bath is the second most expensive travel destination in the UK. The city gets its name from the Roman bath houses and spas that were constructed way back in history, and as I’ve mentioned, many of those structures remain to this day.

Edinburgh

1. Edinburgh 

The capital city of Scotland was named as the most expensive travel destination in the United Kingdom, and travelers can expect to pay a average of $210 dollars per night for a hotel room. Edinburgh is definitely a more “tough” city and the people here are very proud of where they come from. Edinburgh is also the home to a host of historical sites and was the heart of the Scottish Enlightenment period that produced some of the greatest doctors, philosophers, and authors the world has ever seen.

East Hampton

5. East Hampton

As you will soon see, New York contains the vast majority of the most expensive travel destinations in the United States and we start our list with the obvious: East Hampton. The Hamptons have always been considered some of the nicest areas in America, and have a rich history to back that up. East Hampton is extremely beautiful and charming, and has always been a popular vacation spot. This area is home to some of the richest families and the most expensive homes in the United States, so it’s no surprise that it made the list.

Nantucket

4. Nantucket

Just south of Cape Cod is the beautiful island of Nantucket. If you’re familiar with this island, then it should come to no surprise that it’s one of the most expensive places to visit. The island is fairly small and contains an equally small population, yet it is home to some amazing resorts and estates. The entire island is considered a National Historic Landmark, and you can expect to pay on average of about $273 dollars for a one-bedroom hotel room here.

Martha's Vineyard

3. Martha’s Vineyard

Continuing with the trend of American “old money”, Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts is ranked next. Like Nantucket, the island is fairly small yet it is home to some extraordinarily wealthy families, massive mansions, and expensive resorts. The cost of living here is about 60% higher than the national average and the cost of housing is around 98% higher than the national average as well.

Saratoga Springs

2. Saratoga Springs

Saratoga Springs in New York is consistently ranked as one of the top resort destination in the United States, and this affluent city is still one of the most expensive places to visit in the country. Travelers can expect to pay upwards of $312 dollars for a one-bedroom hotel room here, but many would say it’s worth it given what this small city has to offer.

Montauk

1. Montauk

Montauk, New York is a small census-designated place that borders East Hampton and it makes up the very tip of the end of Long Island. The area, like the rest of Long Island, is comprised of beautiful beaches, wealthy families, six state parks, and some of the largest estates in America. With hotel prices cost on average of $316 dollars per night, it is the most expensive place in the United States to travel to.
