Marsala Wine is Making a Comeback

Marsala Wine

There are many different types of wine out there, each of which are produced in similar, yet different ways. Wine has always been found throughout history, however not all types of wine are enjoyed equally. The majority of countries that produce the best wine are located in regions of the world that see great weather, have fertile land, and above all else, have quality grapes. France and Italy come to mind as some of the leading wine-producing nations, and it seems that a certain type of Italian wine is making a comeback: Marsala.

For many years, Sicily produced some extraordinary wine. Their perfect location on the Mediterranean Sea allowed them to grow some terrific grapes; grapes used to make excellent wine. Unfortunately over the years the island moved away from quality wine, to producing more affordable wines; wines that were mixed with others from the north. Luckily in the 1990’s we saw a shift from mass-produced wine to more quality, better-tasting wine. Among one of these types of wine was a “returning champion”, marsala wine, which we see becoming more and more popular.

Marsala wine is a type of wine that is comparable to port wine, sherry, or Portugal’s Madeira. This fortified wine is now making a comeback. It is no longer a simple, party wine, but a sophisticated and elegant wine that is showing up on five-star restaurants menus around the world. Sicilian vineyards are taking notice, and are quickly jumping into making better tasting marsala wine as production of it has increased over the last few years.

Known for its sweet taste, marsala wine is an excellent choice for many occasions. While this wine was frequently just used in cooking, these higher-quality wines from Pellegrino, Marco De Bartoli, and Targa, are now being picked over other wines. It’s great to see this style of wine making a comeback, and we should expect to see more of it in stores and restaurants around the world.
