Is the BMW i8 The World’s Most Sophisticated Car?

A

BMW has been relatively quiet of late. We’ve seen new vehicle launches from various luxury brands around the world, but not much the German auto legend. Not any more. BMW, who has produced excellence for over a century, has unveiled the i8, a vehicle that not only demonstrates excellence, but takes us into the future.

The BMW i8 is one of the most sophisticated (and complicated) automobiles to ever be created. In engineer language, the i8 is officially called a “plug-in hybrid electric sports car”. Yeah, one of those with a 129-hp electric motor driving the front wheels and a turbocharged 1.5-liter three cylinder engine with 228-hp driving the rear axle. The vehicle takes the hybrid electric car game to an entirely new level.

The major issue with the BMW i8 is, although it can go (60 mph in 4.2 seconds), it’s not going to be blowing away the competition like other luxury sports cars. Secondly, the price tag $137,000 seems a bit aggressive for something that won’t tear up the road. Perhaps we’re being a little picky, the i8 is still a thrilling drive.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t discuss the ultra-sleek, year 2036 design. It has a dynamically low stance, and state-of-the-art interior. The interesting contrasting color scheme is unique for BMW, but it works. The 20-inch tires over a low-Porsche like experience without the Porsche gas-guzzling.

Overall, it remains to be seen if the i8 has a strong enough market to become a mainstay on the roads. While the concept and efficiency of the car are easy to grasp, people are buying luxury cars for different reasons these days.  Perhaps times are changing.
