There’s no better feeling in the world than making a difference in the lives of others. Through nonprofit charities, private and public donations in the billions have helped change the lives of millions of people. Whether it’s giving lose change to the bell ringers around the holiday season, writing a giant check for a cause you care deeply about or volunteering to help build a new home, giving both time and money to charitable organizations helps make the world a better place. 5. Catholic Charities USA – $1.4 billion

One of the largest charities in the United States, Catholic Charities USA acts as an umbrella organization covering many of the Catholic nonprofits throughout the country. With over 1,700 agencies, organizations and institutions joining the cause, Catholic Charities USA is dedicated to helping the millions struggling with poverty.

4. Feeding America – $1.5 billion

Formerly known as America’s Second Harvest, Feeding America is the leading hunger-relief charity in the United States. With a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks and food rescue organizations, Feeding America advocates a strong desire to put an end to hunger once and for all while promoting respect and integrity.

3. Task Force for Global Health – $1.7 billion

Based in Decatur, Georgia, the Task Force for Global Health is an international nonprofit affiliated with Emory University that helps to address a broad range of global health challenges and crises throughout the world. Working in 91 countries, the nonprofit collaborates with other health organizations to improve global health for those in need.

2. Salvation Army – $1.9 billion

Founded in 1856, The Salvation Army is both an evangelical part of the Christian church and an international charitable organization. Headquartered in London, England, this quasi-military operation works by preaching the gospel while also helping provide for those in need across the globe with food and clothing.

1. United Way – $3.9 billion

The world’s largest not-for-profit organization, United Way, helps develop programs that give those in need the means for education, health and income stability. A large majority of donations come from payroll deductions, allowing United Way to continue improving the lives of those throughout the world, both individually and within families and communities.
