Bastrop comes in as one of the poorest towns in the US. With a population of just over 10k, their poverty rate is more than double the state’s average and nearly triple the national average. In fact, about 29.6% of families and 35.3% of the population were below the poverty line.

Ironically, Bastrop is considered to be the largest city and the parish seat of Morehouse Parish, Louisiana. A parish is a small administrative district that typically has its own church and a pastor or priest.
