Kate Upton for David Yurman

Headquartered in New York City, David Yurman Inc. is a privately held American designer jewelry company founded by David Yurman and Sybil Yurman in 1980. Growing up on Long Island, a 16-year-old Yurman met Cuban welder and sculptor Ernesto Gonzales, who taught him the direct welding techniques that inform Yurman’s work today. In the early 1960s, Yurman apprenticed for several years with modernist sculptor Jacques Lipchitz and established his own studio in Greenwich Village while working for various sculptors, including Theodore Roszak. In the late 1960s, Yurman became the shop foreman for sculptor Hans Van de Bovenkamp and it was in this studio that Yurman met the painter Sybil Kleinrock, his future wife and business partner. In the early 1970s, David and Sybil moved to Carmel, New York and formed a company called Putnam Art Works, which specialized in sculptural jewelry. Throughout the next decade, the Yurmans exhibited their jewelry designs, sculptures, and paintings at various galleries and craft fairs, becoming key figures in the American craft movement. Through Putnam Art Works, the Yurmans learned the marketplace for fine crafts and artisanal jewelry and founded the David Yurman company in 1980, with Sybil Yurman acting as a co-creator and collaborator in all facets of the business. Since its creation, David Yurman Inc. has remained an iconic, innovative, and world-class force in the world of luxury jewelry. Prominent supermodels such as Amber Valletta, Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen, and Kate Upton have appeared in David Yurman advertising campaigns, and in 2011, Yurman was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Gem Society–the first time a jewelry designer received this award.
