Is There a Lamborghini Truck on the Road?

2013 Geneva Auto Show

Everyone knows Automobili Lamborghini as an Italian brand and manufacturer of luxury sports cars and grand tourers. But a number of people wonder if there is any such thing as a Lamborghini truck on the road. The answer is a simple one–no. Over Lamborghini’s 51-year existence, the luxury automaker, owned by the Volkswagen Group and headquartered in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, has never rolled a truck off its assembly line. At the time of this posting, Lamborghini only manufacturers two models–the V10-powered Huracán and the V12-powered Aventador–along with three special and limited edition sports cars.

However, Lamborghini has produced a vehicle you might not expect to come from the Italian brand–the SUV. Not only has Lamborghini manufactured and released its own SUV in the past, but it plans to release another model in the future as well. The Lamborghini LM002 was Lamborghini’s first mass-produced SUV and four-wheel drive model to hit the road. Built by the company between 1986 and 1993, the LM002 began as a heavily altered prototype that moved its engine to the front of the vehicle and was built with an entirely new chassis when compared to the original failed LM001.

The LM002 production model was unveiled at the Brussels Auto Show in 1986, where it was nicknamed the “Rambo-Lambo.” The civilian off-road production models included a full luxury package, including full leather trim, tinted power windows, air-conditioning, and a premium stereo system, and Pirelli Scorpion tires with custom tread designs.

19 years after the end of the LM002’s production, a new Lamborghini SUV–the Urus–was unveiled at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show. At the time, this Lamborghini Urus was merely a concept, but in 2013, Lamborghini CEO Stephen Winkelmann confirmed that the Urus will go into production for the 2017 model year.

The Lamborghini Urus is rumored to have a number of powertrain options–a naturally aspirated V10 or V12, a twin-turbo V8 powerplant, or a hybrid drivetrain–and might feature Lamborghini’s first turbo engine with the capacity to reach 600 horsepower. With a front-engine, all-wheel-drive layout, the sporty and angular Urus is expected to reach a top speed of 205 miles per hour. The vehicle’s sales potential is estimated at 3,000 units per year.
