Several states across the US are pushing to ban the sale of gasoline-powered cars, aligning with the Clean Air Act. Unlike electric vehicles, gas cars contribute harmful emissions to the environment. While this seems like a noble idea, it has sparked significant outcry, mainly due to the cost of new vehicles and the challenge of finding charging stations. Here are the top states where the ban could take effect as soon as 2035.

With over 39 million residents and 15 million cars, California forbids gas car sales from 2035. Governor Gavin Newsom signed this into law in September 2022. Known to have one of the strictest environmental regulations in the U.S., America’s most populous state has led the way, and others are following suit.

New York was the fourth state to start moving toward a gas car ban. The state’s first female Governor, Kathy Hochul, signed the law in September 2022, following support from her legislators. Like other states, residents will not forfeit their gas vehicles but cannot make new purchases.

Washington joins the list of states that ban new gas car sales. By 2030, five years earlier than most others, residents will be bound by the law signed in August 2022. Already, the state has one of the highest numbers of electric cars, with its cheaper electricity cost.

Massachusetts was the second state to ban gas vehicle sales. Governor Maura Healey signed the law in August 2022 as part of her climate action plan to cut greenhouse gas emissions and boost green energy. Since then, the state’s Department of Environmental Protection has begun engagements with stakeholders including automobile companies.

Known for its rich history in environmental advocacy, Oregon easily makes the list. The state’s Environmental Policy Commission were major players, reporting that transportation contributes 40% of Oregon’s greenhouse gas emissions. Critics voiced their concerns during public hearings, but the law was signed in December 2022.

Colorado

Known as the Centennial State, Colorado is modifying California’s 2035 ban on new gas-powered cars. Instead, the state will encourage electric vehicle adoption by setting a target for 80% of cars sold to be electric by 2032. Governor Jared Polis supports this pragmatic approach, aiming to balance clean energy goals with practical implementation.

Delaware

Effective December 11, 2023, Delaware’s new emission rules adopt a gradual approach, unlike California’s outright ban. Starting in 2027, 43% of new cars sold must be electric or hybrid, rising to 82% by 2032. As in Colorado, Governor John Carney plans a smoother transition to zero-emission vehicles.

Rhode Island

Small yet making big moves, Rhode Island has already initiated the DRIVE EV program, which supports residents and businesses with rebates for electric vehicles. Governor Dan McKee signed this initiative into law in May 2023, aiming to cut emissions and advance clean transportation goals in America’s smallest state.

New Jersey will start limiting new gasoline-powered car sales in 2027, with a total ban by 2035. Governor Phil Murphy signed the rule into law on March 12, 2023. The rule won’t ban ownership or used car sales, and residents can still import gas vehicles meeting emissions standards.
