
Guinness & Co., one of the most successful beer brands in the world, recently announced the release of an “ultra-premium beer” brewed with both beer and whiskey malt. Made to be served in stemless champagne flutes, Guinness The 1759 is a “rare, limited edition, small batch amber ale from the Guinness Master Brewers… passed down from a 200-year old recipe.” Guinness The 1759 was launched to coincide with the upcoming holiday season and is the first in a special Guinness Signature Series that will produce a range of limited edition luxury beers. Only 90,000 25.4-ounce bottles will be produced with a suggested retail price of $34.99 a bottle. Made with the same Guinness yeast that has been used for more than 125 years, Guinness The 1759 is brewed with traditional beer malt and the same peated malt whiskey used in famous Scotch and Irish whiskeys, resulting in an 9 percent ABV amber ale with subtle hop notes, mellow caramel flavors, a fruity sweetness, and a butterscotch aroma. Available online and through various beer retailers, bars, and restaurants early next month, the luxury beer will arrive in a sleek black cage-and-cork topped bottle and a velvet-lined gift box.
Guinness is a popular Irish dry stout that originated in the brewery of Arthur Guinness at the famed St. James’s Gate in Dublin, Ireland. Originally leased to Guinness in 1759 at £45 ($72.58) a year for 9,000 years, St. James’s Gate became the largest brewery in Ireland in 1838 and the largest in the world by 1886 with an annual output of 1.2 million barrels. Although it is no longer the largest brewery in the world (the MillerCoors brewery in Colorado currently holds that title), it is still the largest brewer of stout in the world. The iconic beer is brewed in almost 60 countries and is available in more than 120, while annual sales total 1.8 billion U.S. pints. Guinness is still the best-selling alcoholic drink in Ireland, a country where Guinness & Co. makes more than $2.5 billion every year. Headquartered in London, England since 1932, Guinness merged with Grand Metropolitan plc in 1997 and is currently part of the British-based multinational alcoholic drinks producer Diageo. The Guinness Storehouse–a converted brewery turned museum–is Dublin’s most popular tourist attraction.
