The 15 Richest Doctors in the World

doctor

The biggest misconception about doctors is that everyone assumes they’re immeasurably wealthy. While they are well-paid, it takes most doctors years of hard work in their profession to make a significant amount of money thanks to the fact that they graduate with so many student loans and debts. Most doctors are paid nicely, but it also takes time most doctors to perfect their craft, earn a solid reputation and work their way up into the big leagues. Read on to find out who the richest doctors in the world are in various degrees of medicine.

Tiffany Raiford is a lifelong Floridian, wife to my high school sweetheart and mother of four littles (two girls and boy/girl twins...no, they are not identical and yes, I'm sure). My kids love to whine, so I love to wine. My loves include nap time, bed time, date night, travel and evenings and weekends when my husband is home because he handles all diaper changes.

  1. Dr Phil is Not a doctor,there is a simple test to determine if someone is a doctor. If you are on a plane and someone has a heart attack and they ask if there is a doctor, if you can respond you are a doctor, Phil would still be sitting in his chair.

  2. Three aren’t even physicians, the wealthiest didn’t make it by practicing medicine, and all the others who made it from practice with the exception of Dr. Andrews are plastic surgeons.

  3. It’s not surprising that doctors get rich. Modern medicine is an exquisite scam, perhaps the single biggest scam in human history. The patient is made to feel he or she isn’t “paying” because “insurance covers it” effectively taking the whole medical community out of the competitive marketplace economy. Modern medicine hasn’t even managed to find a cure for the common cold, much less the various cancers, MS, CP, Cystic Fibrosis and 65 or so other so-called “incurable” diseases . . . even after 65+ years of trying, in some cases, with unlimited funding. Brilliantly done, and these doctors are reaping the rewards of a remarkably gullible public.

    • Emily almost all these doctors are plastic surgeons,TV personalities or inventors. Yoir arguement is without merit. Nobody forces anyone to go to a plastic surgeon it’s self pay elective procedures. What your problem

        • BS you can’t explain a concept you don’t understand. The wealth of these doctors in great degree are from sources other than insurance,which is salient to your comment.

          • Morph – I AM a physician. One of the lowly US-trained Board Certified in a primary care field. Smart enough to have retired in 2011 because the game is too rigged and articles like this promulgate the wealth envy of those who don’t give a whit about 13 years education/training after high school. So yes I understand. Fully.
            Perhaps I should have responded directly to Emily’s post. It would seem she’s angry because physicians are not gods at her disposal. “incurable” disease got you mad at doctors? Try getting mad at your choice of parents. Even Methuselah croaked off.

          • I am a physician also. However, being envious of those choose a different path is not helpful. I agree there are a lot of problems in our system unfortunately we took a wrong turn with the central planners of Obamacare. We need a physician,patient centered healthcare.

            (0)
          • That would involve getting insurance out of the practice. People need to own their insurance and file for reimbursement with companies they choose or were given… after they pay their bill at the physician’s office. That would go a long way to re-establish the physician-patient relationship. Sadly, this is not the way our culture is evolving. The nanny state conquers all who attempt autonomy and personal responsibility.

          • Agreed. Please read Priceless by John Goodman. It is a little dry,however very enlightening at the same time.

          • Great response. As a nurse, I salute you. Most doctors work very very hard, unlimited hours for not that much these days. Meeting the education requirement, malpractice insurance premiums and hours put in should guarantee a seven figure salary. It doesn’t. There is a big gap between what they charge and what insurance companies actually pay them. Don’t knock doctors people. They still save lives.

  5. And if you were sick, you wouldn’t want to go see any of these so called MD’s. These are not real doctors. we don’t make anywhere near that type of money.

  6. I naively thought this list would be limited to those who had at least been practicing physicians. Silly me! At least two are specifically stated as not being doctors, a whole bunch are plastic surgeons to the stars, another bunch are doctors who went into business, and then there’s Doctor Phil, a psychologist, not an M.D. Add a bunch of typos and you’ve got one heck of a feature.

  7. Plastic surgeons and Drug and medical equipment start ups only the Jock Doc is really in medical practice. I wonder how many of these “doctors” anyone would go to with a real medical problem?

    (0)
  8. Phil McGraw is NOT a medical doctor and holds a doctoral degree in psychology from a questionable academic institution. He is not licensed as a psychologist or a mental health practitioner in ANY state. He should not be included on this list with real medical care professionals, period.

    • THIS IS CORRECT! he should rather be on the list of successful proteges of mentors such as Oprah. and i’m truly not saying that there’s anything wrong with that. it’s just that he’s not a doctor, and certainly not a doctor who went on the become wealthy.

  9. Wow…so I got to number 7 and until that point all but one were plastic surgeons…that is SO sad. While there are occasions where plastic surgery is used to help a person after some damage to the body or to alleviate a condition, most of these made their money carving up Hollywood idiots…so sad. So much talent wasted on nothing…when these doctors could have been saving lives instead.

  10. Dr. Gary Michelson sounds like a really great doctor by the use of his wealth.

    BTW, in reference to the top position, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong. If his wealth is $7.3 billion then his companies sold for at least 8 billion not million. A little thinking while proofreading goes a long way.

  11. Seriously? 1 Orthopedic surgeon for professional athletes, 5 plastic surgeons, 2 TV personalities, 5 have no patient contact at all and get their money from some some type of healthcare business, and there are 2 that are not even doctors so shouldn’t be on the list.

  12. RE: This quote from the article: “it takes most doctors years of hard work in their profession to make a significant amount of money thanks to the fact that they graduate with so many student loans and debts”. Huh? It takes ALL college students years of work to pay off college loans…BUT DOCTORS ARE WAY OVER PAYED AND EASILY ABLE TO PAY OFF THEIR LOANS FAR FASTER THAN THE REST OF US. You want us to feel sorry for the poor 6 figure earning doctors?? ROFLMAO!

  13. I hope this dispels some myths that doctors are all filthy rich. The only regularly practicing physicians on this list are Beverly Hills plastic surgeons. The only guy on this list I can really respect is Dr. Andrews.

    Moral of the story. If you want to be rich in medicine, do boob jobs in California, develop some patentable technology, etc but don’t actually practice day to day ‘grind’ medicine.

  14. “It takes most doctors years of hard work in their profession to make a significant amount of money thanks to the fact that they graduate with so many student loans and debts?” How does that compare to ordinary English majors, who spend as much as $240K on undergraduate school, and then are lucky to make $40K? How does that compare with most other PhDs? Doctors’ college loan:income ratio is commonly much better (lower) for doctors than it is for most other students and professions, i.e. doctors make more money relative to their debts than most other people. Doctors who complain are WHINERS.

  15. Go figure, besides Oz & Dr Phil, most haven’t see a patient and the others rearrange faces for those that hate themselves.

    (0)
  16. Plastic Surgery is the way to go it seems, and marry someone who needs it that has a lot of bucks. Most regular doctors are living near the lower economic scale thanks to Obama and are on the receiving end of the hate all doctors theme pushed by the left. So, these guys who provide an unnecessary surgery (just for looks only) are loaded and with out conscience. most of their patients look like s bad cartoon.

  17. What does that last statement about Ronda Stryker even mean? She inherited her grandfathers stake so what does it matter if he lives a few more years as he had to DIE for her to get it.

  18. Psalm 49:

    6 Those who trust in their wealth
    And boast in the multitude of their riches,
    7 None of them can by any means redeem his brother,
    Nor give to God a ransom for him—
    8 For the redemption of their souls is costly,
    And it shall cease forever—
    9 That he should continue to live eternally,
    And not see the Pit.

    10 For he sees wise men die;
    Likewise the fool and the senseless person perish,
    And leave their wealth to others.
    11 Their inner thought is that their houses will last forever,[a]
    Their dwelling places to all generations;
    They call their lands after their own names.
    12 Nevertheless man, though in honor, does not remain;
    He is like the beasts that perish.

    13 This is the way of those who are foolish,
    And of their posterity who approve their sayings.
    14 Like sheep they are laid in the grave;
    Death shall feed on them;
    The upright shall have dominion over them in the morning;
    And their beauty shall be consumed in the grave, far from their dwelling.
    15 But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave,
    For He shall receive me. Selah

    16 Do not be afraid when one BECOMES RICH,
    When the glory of his house is increased;
    17 For when he dies he shall carry nothing away;
    His glory shall not descend after him.
    18 Though while he lives he blesses himself
    (For men will praise you when you do well for yourself),
    19 He shall go to the generation of his fathers;
    They shall never see light.
    20 A man who is in honor, yet does not understand,
    Is like the beasts that perish.

  19. So the take-home is that the really rich doctors make their money in the corporate world as major stockholders, or as patent holders or as high-end service providers to the very wealthy in L.A. and Miami, who pay cash for their services.

    Which excludes 99 percent of doctors.

    (0)
  20. Do note that most of the people did not make their money by being a doctor ( except the plastic surgeons) but rather by getting OUT of medicine and doing something else like pharmaceuticals, medical products, etc…
    Most of the doctors I know drive toyotas and wish they hadn’t gone into medicine…..

    • My T-100 is 21 yo. I’ll put her up against any of the aged Volvos in the parking lot any day of the week. Ask me how get the opportunity to drive a beaut like mine with only 13 years post high school education. She’s as green as can be.

      • If U had the intellectual capacity to Copy just 10% of what I have done in my life, you would be considered a goddamn Genius

        (0)
    • Ah, a vague assertion that you are a genius. No details of course. What do you do that is perfect? Please elaborate on your genius and/or perfection as you implied. Just give me the 10%, I’m dying to hear it. I especially want to hear how you heal yourself and have no need for silly doctors.

      (0)
    • All they ever do? lol You forgot to mention that those who wanted to be medical doctors took out a school loan for an undergraduate degree (minimum of $80,000 for 4 years), studied 30+ hours/week x 4 years and made nearly perfect grades in college, took out ANOTHER $200,000+ loan to attend medical school, studied 40+ hours/week x 4 years in medical school plus attended classes, and after medical school graduation worked in a 3-7 year “slave labor” residency program for a mandatory 60 hours/week which paid them less than what an RN earned.

      Get off your rump and perfect yourself instead of insisting that others did nothing, but somehow succeeded in life. Succeeding in life takes EFFORT. No one is entitled to success. Success comes through a LOT of hard work.

  21. Twins Jeffrey and Christopher George started a pill mill empire that raked in $40 million in two years in Broward and Palm Beach counties. Top that please.

  22. There is only one “real” doctor on this whole list – the orthopedic surgeon. All the rest are plastic surgeons who do not treat sick people or people who inherited or sued for their money or started medical related companies.

    (0)
  23. Doctors! There are doctors and there are doctors. Some are conscientious and some fall slightly short at times. In the end they are all human.
    The main quality a doctor needs is real and palpable compassion. When they are good listeners and truly care about others, whether children or adults who need attention, then they are additionally equipped to give them the care they need.
    Back in the day the good Doc made house calls. You felt comforted when he or she showed up, even when they opened up the ‘bag of cures’.
    We need a group that makes house calls so they can usher in the new age of ‘trust’ that tells us they truly care about us and our family’s health and well being .

  24. I feel sorry for some doctors they have to take bribe money and use Humans as guinea pigs. Large pharmaceutical pay doctors 2 million dollars over a 5 year period. Let’s me ask you doctors a real question . Does it make you feel stupid that athletes will always make more money then you and you went to school for a hundred ??? Come on no wonder you over charge and do insurance fraud. Let see Johnson and Johnson, Boston Scientific , just to name a few just lost 73 million to a Dallas Texas woman because the United States Of America allows Vaginal Mesh To be used by doctors and will not Recall it. Just like cigarettes , the Unites States Of America have their hands right in the money also. and the doctor that went to school for a hundred years got pulled right in court , I would feel like a very stupid doctor. I took bribe money and I’m in court with the corporation that promise me I would be protected. How did that work out for you doctors ???? Are you doctors or Butchers ????

  25. if the socialists in government get their way and take over health care as a single payer run system like the Veterans Health Administration vis-a-vie obammycare, doctors will be one rung above postal workers! the really smart kids will get MBA’s and flock to wall street, the D and C students will go to dumb downed medical schools.

  26. Most PhDs do not represent themselves as doctors. I think most of us expected that Phil was a Medical Doctor. He sure rips into people on TV, what does that have to do with healing!

    (0)
  27. Dr. Oz, the guy who was called before Congress for lying and misrepresenting products on his show, shock he’s in the group! The Dr. Phil, the fat guy that actually previously wrote a diet book. The more fake you are, the more you make, much like politics.

    • I know a hard working orthopedic surgeon who is performing life changing ankle, knee, shoulder, etc surgeries every day. He is in the hospital and on call almost all week long. Probably makes $600k a year maybe? I’d put him up against those idiots on this list anyday.

      (0)
      • Dr. Football – it is a credit to your surgeon that you would put him up against these physicians. But calling them “idiots” speaks more against yourself than them.

        (0)
        • Wrong – I don’t respect doctors who no longer get their hands bloody (so to speak). They make millions doing lectures, managing ER units, etc. A doctor should do what he was trained to do – help people, not himself.

          (0)
  28. This is a worthless list that put people who are NOT doctors on it and leaves out many doctors. For instance Bill” McGuire $400 million, Gary Michelson 1.4 Billion, etc

  29. Who writes this crap? Someone in first year at city college?

    “The biggest misconception about doctors is that everyone assumes they’re immeasurably wealthy. Stunningly poor.
    Did this rag ever consider hiring an editor?

    Or, is this a sort of self-generated, attract eyeballs, article?
    Derr… I’ve been played.

  30. Plastic and cosmetic surgeons are doing liposuction on healthy people and disfiguring them, killing them, or starting the downward cycle of disease processes. They mislead, upsell, and operate against consent regarding liposuction which is a truly unsound procedure with long-term health and cosmetic consequences.

    (0)
    • Come on, Anonymous ! Your claims are ridiculous ! Last time I checked, nobody was ever forced to submit to cosmetic surgery. duh !

      (0)
      • Reconstructive surgeries are performed by board certified plastic surgeons. These surgeries are medically recommended / needed. I don’t feel that anyone trusting a surgeon to be a medical expert should have their health and life ruined. Liposuction is part of many reconstructive procedures. People aren’t forced to fly, but if an airline was not safe and was causing deaths, people would not tolerate it. The double standard regarding plastic surgeries is exactly one of the many reasons why the surgeons are getting away with dangerous, unregulated, harmful behavior.

        (0)
        • Very true. I know many people who have been severely harmed by plastic surgeons. It’s a deceptive business and entirely unfair to the public that there aren’t protections in place.

          (0)
          • No one is forcing people to have plastic surgeries. They make the choice to feel better about themselves. Sometimes things go wrong but they are aware there is some risk. No woman “needs” larger breasts but MILLIONS get them. And why would anyone inject poison (Botox) into their face just to get rid of wrinkles.

            (0)
  31. When CEO’s get millions; gruesome Matt Lauer and phony Brian Williams get multi-millions– doctors should be paid less? Something wrong with this picture.

    (0)
  32. 99% of those hollyweird people that have surgery end up looking worse or like
    some Michael Jackson wax figure monster! these plastic surgeons should be
    using their God giving talent to help people with real disfigurements and life
    threatening diseases! they will be punished for wasting and abusing that gift!

    (0)
    • I understand YOUR point and you are against it. However most look better and are happy with the results. You would not even notice who had work done on most if done right. But yes some over do it and look like FREAKS.
