The Most Expensive Airline Tickets You can Purchase

Panetta Heads To Brussels For NATO Conference

It’s pretty safe to say flying anywhere nowadays is expensive. Even taking a short flight half way across the country or traveling from one major city to another can cost anywhere from hundreds to thousands of dollars. High gas prices don’t really help provide a much cheaper option, but a number of people are beginning to once again take to the open road–or the ocean–rather than the sky. Not only are airlines expensive, but many find them unreliable, uncomfortable, and just a pain to deal with. But, if you happen to have no choice and are in the market for a trip that will cost you more than a nice new car, look no further. Below are the most expensive one way airline tickets you can buy.

5. New York (USA) to Lisbon (Portugal) – $37,360

For a relatively manageable distance of 3,367.19 miles, you most likely wouldn’t be expecting your flight to last over 46 hours. Departing from JFK to Lisbon on the Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA), this two day flight has layovers in both Tokyo, Japan and Munich, Germany. All those museums and monasteries better be worth the trip.

4. New York (USA) to Istanbul (Turkey) – $37,992

Once again, ANA delivers with a 5,009.82 mile flight lasting over 45 hours. Departing from JFK and arriving at the largest urban European city two days later, this flight once again has layovers in both Tokyo and Munich. Even though it may be more expensive, you’ll get to see the sights of Istanbul an hour earlier than those of Lisbon.

3. New York (USA) to Oslo (Norway) – $39,001

Another special offer from All Nippon Airways, this 3,672.61 mile flight from New York City to Oslo, Norway takes about 28 hours with layovers in Tokyo and Frankfurt, Germany. Seeing as a typical flight from JFK to Oslo takes just under eight hours, it might be best to reconsider your booking options to save time and money.

2. Santiago (Chile) to Beirut (Lebanon) – $39,525

Flying from one country’s capital to another will usually save you time and money while keeping you closer to the sights and attractions you want to see. However, taking Air France from Santiago, Chile to Beirut, Lebanon isn’t the best move. Clocking in at over 20 hours and 8,286.39 miles, it might be cheaper to sail into Lebanon’s largest seaport.

1. New York (USA) to Sao Paulo (Brazil) – $40,994

Blatantly leaving New York City in the wrong direction, this 4,771.69 mile ANA flight lasts over 59 hours. The two and a half day tour of the sky has layovers in both Tokyo, Japan and London, England before heading back to your original destination on the other side of the globe. Essentially, you’d be able to buy a luxury car in New York City and drive to Brazil for around the same price.
