About the Most Expensive Pink Diamond in the World

Sotheby's

The Pink Star is the most expensive pink diamond in the world. In fact, it’s the most expensive diamond in the world as a whole. This gorgeous diamond sold in 2013 at auction for more than $83 million. Sotheby’s sold the brilliant pink diamond for $83.2 million, making it the most expensive diamond ever to sell. The previous record was also a pink diamond, which sold at auction in 2010 for $46 million.

The Pink Star is not just any diamond. It’s currently set in a ring. It has 59.6 carats, and it’s completely flawless. What makes this diamond even more beautiful and special – and exceptionally expensive – is the fact that pink diamonds are the rarest type of diamond in the world. There are so few of them that the ones that are currently in existence are even more expensive.

The Pink Star was sold to an unknown buyer at the Sotheby’s auction in November 2013. The day before the Pink Star was purchased, another expensive colored diamond was also sold at an auction held by famed auction house, Christie’s. It was an elaborate orange diamond that sold for more than $36 million.

The Pink Star is a diamond currently set in a ring. The diamond itself is a large oval shape. At the moment, it features no other adornments, not that it needs any. However, the buyer of the diamond might choose to have it reset into a more elaborate setting, such as a platinum band with additional diamonds. It could also be reset into a necklace. Since the diamond is so large, it’s actually the perfect size to be worn as either. Since colored diamonds are so rare, it’s worth being placed in a setting that’s going to allow it to be seen and admired. At the moment, it’s the largest and most expensive pink diamond in the world.
