$26 Million Blue Moon Diamond Arrives in Los Angeles

Diamonds are some of the most beautiful natural creations in the world, which is probably the reason women love them so much. There is not one diamond in the world identical to another, though there are many everyday diamonds most people walk right by without giving a second glance. Other diamonds, however, are worth that second glance. Some are so rare and so breathtaking that they’re worth millions of dollars and not available to the public.

The Blue Moon Diamond, however, is available to the public right now. This gorgeous diamond was discovered in South Africa in January, in the Cullinan mine. The rough, uncut diamond was taken into possession by Cora International, a world famous diamond jewelry manufacturer in New York City, for the price of $26 million. Cora International cut the diamond into a brilliant 12-carat cushion cut diamond that’s classified as flawless.

What makes this diamond particularly unique is the fact that it is a bright, vivid blue. This makes it very rare, and colored diamonds are nowhere near as common as colorless diamonds. The presence of boron – a very small amount – in the diamond is what gives it its vivid blue shade. Between its size and color, it’s one of the rarest diamonds in the world. In addition to that, blue diamonds are far less common than other colored gemstones, which already make up a very small percentage of diamonds in the world.

At the moment, the public can see the Blue Moon Diamond at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles. The diamond will be on display from September 13, 2014 until January 6, 2015. Anyone in the Los Angeles area during this timeframe is encouraged to visit the diamond, as it’s a very rare opportunity to see one of the world’s rarest and most amazing natural creations.
