The Chanler, Rhode Island
Newport is one of the loveliest areas in all of New England. This hotel was built by a New York Congressman by the name of John Winthrop Chanler as a private mansion overlooking the ocean. Each of the restaurants and main areas of the hotel overlook the expanse of the Atlantic Ocean from atop the cliff. The cliffwalk outside the hotel is approximately 3 miles long and features some of the most beautiful views on the East Coast.

Caesar Augustus, Capri
It sits more than 1,000 feet above the Bay of Naples in Italy, on top of a cliff. It’s safe to say that you will not find more beautiful views anywhere on earth. It’s situated along the top and sides of Mount Solaro, one of the most beautiful locations in all of Italy. There is not one room that does not offer sweeping panoramic views of the Bay and all that goes with it, but it does come at a price. It’s difficult to get to this gorgeous hotel. It takes 15 minutes by convertible taxi to make it to the top and bottom along winding, steep roads that are sure to terrify.

The resorts in Bali do one of two things; they sit right atop the ocean water or they are situated on top of the cliffs around the waters to that you get an even better view of the ocean than you do sitting on top of it – if that’s even possible. This hotel is one of the most beautiful in the world. Each guestroom here sits inside the walls of the cliff, cascading down and providing you with uninterrupted views from your terrace. The pool is an infinity pool, which only makes sense when you’re on the side of a mountain.

Aman Resorts, Bali
This gorgeous Bali hotel sits at the top of a cliff, with three pools working their way down the side of the cliff to the beach. The walking trails and paths take guests from the top of the resort down to the beach from the Cliffside. One of the most stunning features of this hilltop property is the magnificent library and its floor to ceiling windows that overlook the top tier of the pool and the rest of the ocean from high atop the cliff.

The Caves, Jamaica
Truly a Cliffside hotel, this Jamaican getaway is pretty awesome. The cliffs are made of limestone and sit atop the beautiful sea water. There are 12 bungalows built into the cliff side and top, on top of natural caves. Staircases have been carved from the natural limestone so that guests can reach the water from their bungalows atop the cliff. The best part about this cliff? It faces west, so everyone can see the majestic sunset over the ocean from what is only the most beautiful location around.

This hotel, located directly on the side of a cliff in Spain, is breathtaking. The hotel is built to look like a village that cascades effortlessly down the side of a mountain, and that’s exactly what it does. Hotel Caruso Belvedere, Amalfi Coast
Situated atop Ravello, this breathtaking hotel is one of the most beautiful clifftop hotels in the world. With beautiful views of the bay and the coast, this is one resort you must make time to visit. The Amalfi Bay sits more than 1,150 feet below the hotel, and the hotel also offers beautiful views of the Mediterranean city at its feet. There are walking paths connecting the hotel to the little town of Ravello, but beware the steep uphill climb on the way back to the resort.

Villa Orsula, Croatia
A local entrepreneur built this hotel as a mansion for himself and his family in the 1930s. It was recently renovated and turned into a luxury hotel that sits on the top of a cliff over the sea. Gardens trail down the side of the cliff into the ocean, and the onsite restaurant features completely unblocked views of the sea. Old grapevines create a complete canopy on the terrace where breakfast is served each morning, which makes this one of the most unique and gorgeous hotels in the world.

Jade Mountain, St. Lucia
The Caribbean is filled with gorgeous resorts along the beach, but very few are situated atop a cliff along the ocean. This combination makes for some amazing views. There are 24 rooms called infinity rooms. They are missing one wall; the one that faces the ocean. The best part is that the missing wall doesn’t give way to land, it gives way to an infinity pool that opens up right into your guest room and makes it appear as if you’re falling directly into the ocean from atop the cliff.

Birkenhead House, South Africa
The Birkenhead is located approximately 100 miles to the south of Cape Town, one of the busiest and most popular tourist destinations in South Africa. What makes this hotel truly unique is the fact that from the outside, it’s not that interesting. However, what it does is hide the fact that the entire resort is built to hide the pool that runs from the top of the cliff to the bottom, by creating a waterfall to the top of one of the hotel restaurants, and another to the pool at the bottom. The cliff on which the hotel sits is not particularly high, but it is the highest in the area and it offers the most spectacular views anywhere in South Africa.
